Just wanted to say I don't know how it's possible that I never

thought about making ham stock before! My goodness have I been missing out. I made the stock with my ham bone. 1 ice cube tray and 2 - 1/2 cup portions frozen and used 4 cups to make split pea soup...Julia's. Youza! That soup is fantastic! I can't wait to make southern green beans. Now I need to find another ham bone to make more stock...it makes a WORLD of difference!

Isn't that soup amazing? Everyone in my family knows to save their ham bones for me.

If anyone you know buys a spiral-cut ham for a party chances are they throw the bones away. I've been known to leave parties with a delicate party favor in one hand and a greasy plastic-bagged bone in the other.

I have always made my own chicken stock and I will use this

spot to say something I have wanted to say for years. I don't remember how many years ago in a thread about making chicken stock Richard in Cinci said his stock "jelled while it was sitting on the counter, bless it's heart". Can you even picture me the first time I had the same? I was laughing, and almost crying I was so proud. Thank goodness I had told John about what Richard had said about the jelling factor so he wasn't ready to take me to see a Dr. Anyway, the point is why did I not think of using the bone to make stock. I always made a pot of pinto beans but never stock. Now...I must have another bone! I know they sell the bones at Honey Baked so I always have that.

How funny. I"ve asked guests at the resort I work at to save ham bones for me

It is my secret stash and I would keep the job just to get the bones! Just kidding but it is a great resource. People are so happy to oblige as they hate throwing the wonderful bones away. They usually are here for just a short time so they don't have time (or the urge) to make soup. Call me crazy but it works for me!
