Kindle Deal of the Day: Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential for $1.99

Definitely a must-read, if, for no other reason than AB's rant on the foolishness...

...of opening a restaurant as a business venture when you have little or no experience actually running a restaurant.

He is dead-on with his assessment of why a person who can cook well, and gets compliments from family and friends that include, "You should open a restaurant!", should never do so without either gaining the necessary expertise to operate one, or hiring the right people to do it for you.

It cured me of even thinking about it.

Michael

People who say "you should open a restaurant" almost NEVER know what they're talking about because

they think all that's involved is cooking a few dinners a night. They don't understand the issues involved in making dozens of the exact same meals day in day out for years, hiring and firing staff and crew, ordering and managing supplies, meats and produce and finally working 18 hour days, 7 days a week until you want to walk in traffic.

Try and explain THAT to them. Or just give 'em Bourdain's book.

I started the book and put it away (he reads like such a douche) but his reading it

on DVD mitigates alot of that negativity because of his self deprecation. Been a fan ever since. If you get the chance, read some of his fiction "Bone in the Throat", "Gone Bamboo" and "The Bobby Gold Stories". He's also been writing chunks of the HBO series "Treme". Like him or not, that boy has some skills.
