Kirkland vanilla? I just opened a big bottle of Costco's vanilla and don't like the smell. It just

doesn't smell like the vanilla I am accustomed to. Does anyone else have a similar reaction or am I just a bit whacky?

I figure I can use it in foods that don't matter too much but would not use it in last night's tapioca pudding.

I just sniffed mine and now don't have a clue whether it smells like all vanillas...

but it tastes great in my baked goods. I know....this wasn't very helpful:(

Had that happen with TJ's, blech. Also, no more Costco Cinnamon for me

The no name cinnamon I've bought at Grocery Outlet was better, this has a weird taste. Never again will I buy it from Costco.

The Vanilla I got at TJ's yrs ago wasn't from Madagascar and tasted very different, didn't like it at all.

the good thing about both Costco and TJ's is that they accept returns(more)

I have returned foods, etc with no problem.
That said , there are various types of cinnamon and vanilla-
One cinnamon makes my teeth ache...others I love.
There are different vanillas- Madagascar, Tahitian, Mexican.
Each has a distinct taste- and use.

I have the mutant size bottle of Nielsen Massey, so I took the Costco

bottle, took my older vanilla beans and put them together to ramp up the flavor.

I agree, take it back

They have a great return policy, I've even taken back open wine.

With the cinnamon I'd already made a batch of cinnamon sugar with it, and well it was only something like $4 (you get what you pay for), but it really does have an off taste and it's suppose to be the same type of standard "cinnamon" you get at the supermarket. I checked before I bought it.

I'm still working on my huge bottle of vanilla I got a smart and final, but I doubt they still carry the same one.

It doesn't smell like any of the other vanilla varieties, all of which I adore. Can't take it back

I shopped with a friend. So I'll just have to make lots of cookies. My hips will be pleased.

But I'm buying some other good stuff, probably back to Madagascar.

I know this is just me, but I don't like my Nielsen Massey Tahitian vanilla

I much prefer Mexican Vanilla.

I also dislike the way Ghirardelli chocolate chips smell. They taste okay when baked but I think they have a wierd sour smell.

I'd call and ask, I bet you still can take it back given it's their brand

Plenty of non-Costco folks shop with giftcards. Plus, you don't even have to be a member to buy booze or rx drugs there.

Ditto. Nothing wrong with Costco vanilla. There are so many types of vanilla and preferences

One does not like cilantro but another does.
One does not like Tahitian vanilla but another does.
I don't like Mexican vanilla but lots of others do.

Different palates, different preferences but overall for a middle-of-the-road vanilla I like the Costco vanilla. I tired of spending the big bucks on Nielsen Massey and tried it a couple years back. Good results. I do kind of what Marilyn does- I take vanilla beans and "store" them in the Costco vanilla to beef up the flavor.

I brought vanilla beans home from Tahiti...

and put a bunch of them into a bottle, added some good Tortolan rum and I have a great vanilla extract!

It is so much more floral than the Madagascar vanilla that I usually buy. I am in love!

I think this is a good idea and if Costco won't take it back.

I need to shorten my fingernails. That went through before I had finished yacking.

I smelled and tasted this vanilla again and really REALLY don't want it in my food. I put my old vanilla beans in my good vanilla last night. At their age, they still smelled good so I thought they deserved to be put to good use. So I'll try this with the Kirkland if I'm stuck with it. No wonder it was so cheap.

So disappointed as vanilla has always been my favourite flavour.
