I tried to write and tell you the story but the thing dissappeared....

I am a direct descendant as my Mum was the daughter of...some 3 generations of an Irish sea captain who sailed to Cape Town with wife and 7 daughters. One daughter eloped with a sailor from below decks...a dreadful scandal and she was cut off without a penny. She had to make money and so marketed the chutney that my GGGmother apparently served to her guests...now this may have been originally from a cook she had at the time, being a fruity type chutney as are the Cape Malay fruity curries, who knows.

This young lass had a fair success with the chutney in her life time and ofcourse her offspring then marketed it...nothing came down my line of this. I havent even met any of them.

The little griffin on the bottle is from the family crest and the homely lady on the lid does not depict this GGGmother at all.

I believe Judy's onions business bought Mrs Balls out and then Gants...but I cant be sure...anyway the later years brought about the new flavours which I think are amazing...we are lucky to get them here...thank you for the recipe....it is similar to the one I have that has been passed down but not quite the same.

I have made 'my' chutney a few times..(it's the bottling that puts me off )and it tastes very good but somehow opening a bottle of bought Mrs Balls just bring the whole family story/scandal to mind and I love it, also it is really good, so why go to the trouble of making it at home?

I am going to try the recipe you posted, just because....

joanie, would you have more luck with longer posts if you typed them in Word and then copied

and pasted here and then immediately submit?

prolly, but you know I dont start out thinking about a long story smileys/smile.gif...

I should copy and save if one turns out longer than it should be.smileys/wink.gif

Thanks, Joanie. I have the same problem with long posts..

and each time I think to myself that I SHOULD have used Word!

What a great family story! Thanks for posting.
