late to the turkey soup party - BONES soup?

I baked a small turkey today just for us. Now the somewhat better pieces are in a freezer bag and about 4 cups of smaller bits in another baggie. .

What to do with bones without much meat? Being really tuckered out, I just now put them in a crockpot with water to cover (abut 8 cups and a sliced onion. Is it worth the trouble to hope for decent broth off just the bones and skin, without much meat??? If ok, I can put the bits back in the strained liquid tomorrow, plus the saved juices from the pan.

I'm whupped this week -extra work and knowing company is coming for Christmas. Poor me. (First world problems are not so bad.)

 
I think you are doing the right thing. You'll get something for nothing, really, and if you...

...reduce the resultant turkey broth you can make soup, turkey a la king, congee, or any number of other things.

I try to never let a turkey or rotisserie chicken go to waste.

Sure, you'll get a nice broth. Another thing to do with poultry bones is to brown them

a bit in the oven before simmering for broth.

 
I made my turkey stock in the slow-cooker this year.

I made a stewed green beans in the slow cooker so decided to try using it to make my broth. I used bones only, started on high until simmering then switched to low for overnight. I was pleased with the outcome.The only minor difficulty was that it was a tight fit for the long bones.

Thanks for the encouragement last night, Michael, as I was feeling that nothing was going well, and had no energy left to brown the bones first as Charley suggested.
The crockpot was on low for about 14 hours and made the loveliest deep turkey-flavored broth which gelled beautifully when chilled. The herbs baked on the skin helped the taste along, too. I'm really happy with the results! (A good night's sleep didn't hurt either.
