London!!

We're going to London next week (in spite of the prices--shudder). It's the first time in 34 years I haven't cooked Thanksgiving dinner. Wow! We'll be a party of 5 most dinners -- my daughter has to work and son and girl friend are going to be doing their own touristy things during the day. Since the latter two are poor as church mice we'll probably be picking up most of the tabs. We're staying in Hammersmith, but can be pretty mobile for a good (not prohibitively expensive) meal. Anyone got any suggestions? No picky eaters in the bunch.

England can be hard. One has to work at it in Italy and France to get bad food....

but that's not a problem in England. No, I don't really mean that; they have some great food in England but it's really pricey. We'd take advantage of their big breakfasts and then have a really big Tea some days. Otherwise, it's pay double what you do in the US for what amounts to fast food or it gets very expensive. Anyway, enjoy.

Pam, we thought Browns Bar and Braserie was good and reasonable..more

This location, at the southesat corner of Hyde Park, is the closest to you. You can look at their menus through the above link.

Fish and chips are a good, iinexpensive choice. We llike The Golden Hind, which is on Marylebone Road just northeast of Hyde Park, about 4 miles from Hammersmith.

Have a great trip!

Simpsons Tavern...very old, Dickension sort of place.....loatsa fun...

....catch a tube to Bank and walk up Threadneedle Street and Cornhill...it is down a narow alley.
The food is real English and good, not so expensive. Go with a sense of adventure...we love going there for something so very different...we usually end with cheese pudding...it is more like 'welsh rarebit'.

Mayfair.....LOVE Al Hamra

Near Wandsworth common.....Chez Bruce...if you can get a table about GBP 33.00 love going there

ON KingsRoad, Sloane Square end, is The Big Easy the oysters are super, an American Restuarant.

Enjoy your visit.

Eating in London

You'll have a nice time now, it's quite mild, probably in the 50's but it will be raining!

I second the recommendation for the Golden Hind but it is on Marylebone Lane, off Marylebone High Street, it makes a big difference!

Across the street form there is also Le Relais de Venise, one item on the menu, steak frites, all the ask you is how you would like it done - it comes with a salad and a great sauce

Zizzi is a greta chain for lower priced Italian and good pizza, they're everywhere

Royal China is another set of restaurants that's very good, especially for dim sum, every day until 3pm

For a totally blow out meal, right in Hammersmith, go to the River Cafe, expensive, but the best Italian food outside Italy ever - reserve now - Maybe for you and OH at lunchtime, greaqt view of the river as well

Rules on Maiden Lane in Soho is VERY traditional English, they serve meats and game with yorkshire pudding in a great room with lots of paintings and stuffed animals (ie trophies, not Gund!)

Wagamama is also a very reasonable chain of noodle places, big sleection and not high prices

Make sure you visti Harrods, even if you don't buy anything, great food halls, also Selfridges and Harvey Nichols have great food halls

Borough Market has good stalls and you can get sausages, it's not everyday, Thurs, Fri and Sat

Have a look at this website

Enjoy!

Pam, would you pop into the Reading Room of the British Museum for me and ogle. I missed

it while there and have been kicking myself ever since.

I've been watching the Monarchy documentary on PBS---I really really want to go to the palace and is

there a museum that has some old old dresses, like from ElizI times? I would so love to see something like that.

Thanks so much!

I'll let you know where we end up. Have been to the British Museum before (probably 35 years ago). What's in the Reading Room? I remember things like the Rosetta Stone and the Greek art from the Parthenon.

Yay for Amelia! Love that book series. I worked at a Law Library for several years and one of the

librarians collected movies that featured libraries---I think it's Desk Set with Tracey and Hepburn that was her favorite since it's about a research library.
