Lucky for them you were an honest person! Can't believe they brushed it off like that!!!!

I've turned down several of those "apply for a card and get $$ off a purchase"....

I will NEVER give a department store my SS#. The clerks all look at me like I'm from Mars.

some of the people who are so nonchalant about their security info would...

probably BENEFIT from having their identity stolen, their credit scores would go UP! LOL!

It is my understanding that many modern copy machines store copies of ...

...EVERYTHING copied on that machine in its internal hard drive.

A tech savvy person could download the hard drive and have copies of every document that had passed through.

Oh my! Sorry this happened to your DD. There have got to be a better way of tracking these types

of things than using a SS#. I had to take a bunch of tests for my teaching credential and my SS# was printed on the outside of all of my testing materials. smileys/frown.gif

I was faxing something at a Kinko's last year sometime...

...and some guy had faxed an employment application. He didn't pick up his verification sheet from the machine, which had a copy of his driver's license and his SS# card on it. I took it over to one of the managers and he shredded it. But goodness knows how many people could have lifted that number.

People are very careless with their information.

Did you know that on your Social Security card it says "not to be used for identification purposes"

I never give it out, you don't have to. The only ones who need it are your insurance companies. My husband was in a high class department store and the sales clerk told him if he filled out a credit application, he'd get 10% off. He did, but refused to give his SS #. They turned him down and we have A++ credit. Frankly I don't care about the 10% off....nor do we have credit cards anymore for anything but gas, groceries, and major purchases that we can pay off in 30 days.

I don't know if I mentioned this, but I went to a DHL warehouse to drop off...

...an overnight letter.

The lobby was deserted when I walked in. Before I saw the "ring for service" button, I saw two letter trays sitting on the counter. A sign above the letter trays read, "Job Applications - Please Fill Out Application and Leave in Tray. DO NOT RING BELL".

There was a tray full of completed applications. The COVER SHEET was simple. It had big boxes for the following information:

FULL NAME:
ADDRESS:
PHONE #:
SOCIAL SECURITY #:
DATE OF BIRTH:
DRIVER'S LICENSE #:
DRIVER'S LICENSE STATE OF ISSUE:

I, or anyone, could have walked off with a couple of dozen of these. No one would've known.

I mentioned it to the employee that took my letter, and she brushed it off very casually.

I didn't want them to "lose" my letter, so I didn't speak to the manager. I sent an email to the regional supervisor on their website when I got home.

The next morning I got an email from the supervisor, assuring me that the issue had been corrected, swiftly and permanently.

Oy.
