Luisa, I just read a great hint for cooking cheesecake in a water bath.

It was in the Jan/Feb '09 Cooks Illustrated. They suggested placing the filled springform pan in a large oven bag (the kind used for baking ham) and pulling the bag up the sides of the cake, leaving the top of the cake exposed. Then place it in the water bath to bake.

I recover from the trauma of making it last time which was on Friday the Thirteenth.....no wonder!
