made some choc pudding tonight and it didn't set up. was i too impatient?

didn't miss any ingredients, followed instructions and took it off the heat when it had thickened. just how thick do you think it should have been? i ended up making icecream out of it and it's actually quite good, but am curious what i did wrong.

 
How long did you chill it? (Great idea to make chocolate ice cream out of it, by the way)!

 
chilled for a couple hrs outside (subzero), still liquid so plopped it in the freeer for

a couple hrs and it didn't even freeze. it's an ina garten recipe. i mustn't have cooked it long enough, though it certainly seemed thick to me...only i could mess up such a simple recipe!

 
Did it use cornstarch to thicken? I seem to remember something about cornstarch

losing thickening ability when it gets old. I've noticed the one I buy now has an expiration date on it.
