"Marinating" a steak to grill with mayo

I saw this tip somewhere to brush a steak with mayonnaise before grilling rather than using a wet marinade. I tried it on a ribeye this weekend and it works as promised. Suspends your other seasonings, doesn't stick to the grill and promotes a nice char.

I have heard of fish being grilled with a light coating of Mayo, but never steaks

Sometimes my marinades have olive oil in them and my husband always complains because the steaks flare up. Now I usually use a dry rub to marinate. We have no trouble with the steaks sticking, I think my husband uses a paper towel to lightly coat the grates with a vegetable oil. Now I am wondering if that flares up, as well.

Was there any difference in the taste or juiciness or your steak?
