Mom's Carmel Frosting

Everyone LOVES this icing.

2 ½ cups sugar

1 ¼ cups butter or margarine

¾ cup evaporated milk

cup confection sugar

1 ½ teaspoon vanilla

Brown ½ cup sugar in black cast iron skillet. Add butter and let melt. Add one cup sugar and mix well. Add evaporated

milk, let boil and add remaining sugar. Cook until forms a soft ball. Sift powdered sugar and add to mixture. Add vanilla,

beat well and spread over cool cake.

Yes - it sort of gets a crust on it or hardens a little - it's not creamy

It's sort of like if you made fudge and poured it in a thin sheet - does that make sense? I see other Southern caramel icings and they are more creamy like traditional icing.

Of course you can control it by what temp you take it to when you cook it.

I've never seen the addition of powdered sugar so I wondered at the consistency

Yes, that's a very good description...I was looking for the fudge consistency like this- thanks!
