More stove talk... FRC

Well, we're going to have to take this one back too. I'm sure we'll have to pay for a second delivery charge, but it's worth it.

Oven works fine, burners get so hot that the rest of the stovetop gets so hot that it burns you if you touch it. Hot - I mean really hot. I didn't think that was right, so we called a repairman and he came out and checked and and he said that's normal for "today's" stoves. No insulation on the top, just underneath in the oven... and with the thin metal, that's what happens.

Is that possibly correct?!! He mentioned that one advantage of the smoothtops is that they do provide some insulation due to the fact they are ceramic/glass. So I guess it'll be a smoothtop again. I'm getting so I don't even wanna cook anymore.

I feel your pain, missy. It's driving me crazy hearing ads now saying "Are your appliances

8 years old! Why keep OLD appliances!"

That's just crazy. I always thought good quality household appliances were supposed to last 15-20 years. It seems like they are just making them cheaper. And you certainly can't repair them cheaply.

On a much happier note, I took the back off my oven, expecting to see the thermal cut-off device hooked up to two wire...LIKE IT SHOWS IN THE PICTURE!!!!

But no, it wasn't there and I would have had to take two more levels of backing off to get to something that I wasn't even sure was there.

So I pushed the stove back, bi*ched to poor Larry, and turned the stove on to confirm I'd not messed up the top panel, which had still been working fine.

And the oven came on! Larry pointed it out and I said "ya, the top part of the stove was always working." And he said, "But look, the heating elements in the oven are getting red."

So YAH! I'm not sure what happened. Maybe pulling the plug out of the wall reset something because it wasn't working since I did the autoclean and now it is.

And I'm never using the autoclean again.
Ever.
Amen.
To quote aajay, it's "agin nature".

I felt the pain when my $700 European made under-the-counter washer committed

suicide after only 6 years. To add insult, every appliance person seemed to think this was ok and that 6 years life was about right. On the other hand I have a refrigerator which is 28 years old and still growing strong. Looks funky, but I keep putting magnets over the rust spots.

Glad it's working again! Yes, the autoclean is what made my old one

get a gigantic hole in the back. 900F temperatures sorta scare me a little too. "It's agin nature" - teehee...

! From the sounds of it, seems like the 7th circle of h*ll where stoves are being made these days...

I'm so sorry for all you've been through on this! A friend has a GE slide-in glass top that I've cooked on and really-really like. The whole top doesn't get hot like you mention but there is a light on top to remind you the surface is still hot after you take a pan off, but it's really just the area of that one burner that is hot. Not sure what model hers is but it's not the top of the line with the bridge burner. It does have one burner that I think they call the tri-ring as it can be a large/med or small burner. I think she got hers at Sears too. (BTW, she always had gas but loves this electric.)

Maybe a trip to a good old fashioned appliance store to speak with someone that's been doing this for years can get you better info on actual products than some guy working at Sears. You may find a higher end model on a scratch/dent display there too. If Sears still has the great customer service policy they use to they may give you all your money back, might take a bit of a fuss, but it may be worth a shot.

They sure don't make'em like they use to...just the other day the clock on the wall oven started to lose time, but other than that it has worked like a charm since they day it was put in new-back in 1959. Knock on wood! I've heard so may bad things from folks on ovens (especially the cycling of the thermostats to keep even heat) that I haven't wanted a new one.

Three words for you....call the manufacturer!!! Let them tell you whether this is normal behavior

for the appliance you have. If not, perhaps they can offer you guidance/support to improve the performance of your appliance.

I really doubt, Dawn, that the stove heating that way is normal...someone is feeding you

a line of bull. How would one lay a spoon, knife, ingredients that will go into the recipe on the stove. It sounds like the stove is a lemon or someone hooked it up wrong.

You need to be careful of "scratch & dent" stores. They used to have good

models with a few scars, but now they fill them with cheaply-made new appliances. I know...I own TWO of them.

Good to know!

We have a good local appliance store that once or twice a year sells their floor samples for some really good prices and full warranty, but I expect there are some places that are a bit more shady.

My old, cheap stove that came with this rental gets hot when the oven is on, but just the two back

burners. Sometimes I forget and the dab of water left in the tea kettle gets hot and the kettle singing a little gives me a shock!

But that doesn't sound right. My mom is really happy with her new Kenmore stove, glass top. The oven is great, it's pretty sensitive like a gas range for the burners. And it cools off quickly. It's the only thing she could get because of where she lives, cause Sears delivers and no one else.
