My Google skills are failing me. Did/do we have a thread on tips for packing + mailing baked goods?

Thanks for these, Barb! Exactly what I was looking for. smileys/smile.gif

And sure--postage to NJ is very reasonable! smileys/wink.gif))

Interesting mailing fact: Any item over 13 OUNCES gets shipped with 70 POUND boxes.

Ya.

I was asking at the post office if there was a cheaper way to mail my Dyslexic Sauce. Right now it cost more for the jar, box, padding and shipping than to make the sauce using Belgium chocolate and really good butter.

A half-pint glass jar weights 7 oz and after filling weighs less than a pound. But add the box and packing material and it's over a pound. I thought that was my breaking point, but the counter-person said anything over 13 ounces gets bundled together for shipping with everything else--up to and including 70 pound boxes.

So...in light of that illuminating information, I'm going to test small vacuum-sealed pouches, like Justin peanut butter packaging (see link). That way I can mail samples without it costing so much.

And I'm pretty sure you can heat the pouch in boiling water...so that's taken care of.

remember to use flat rate boxes if you can. saves money and can be packed quite securely

if sending something like brownies, I leave them uncut/cut just to fit the box. they keep fresher and pack better when left whole. the Nesle site has good information about shipping to soldiers. I think we have that posted somewhere.
