My name is Dawn and I am a fat-aholic. Sitting here this morning I looked down at

dawnnys

Well-known member
my breakfast and I was actually dipping a piece of cheese into the soft yolk of my egg. This was preceded by oatmeal swimming in half-and-half(with cranberries and flaxseed which kinda saves that). Thank goodness I didn't have it with that last peice of coffee cake (which I have been known to spread cream cheese or butter on!) or choclate-coated deep-fried bacon or something!

I need to have protein in the morning to stabilize my blood sugar, but my fat calories are getting too high. I could lose about 10-12 lbs, but my weight is not a real big problem. I'm in good shape, physically, but I cringe when I think of what I may be doing to my arteries, although I do have great genes and my cholesterol (both HDL and LDL) and triglycerides are excellent. I usually skip lunch and am not hungry until dinnertime.

I exercise a lot which is in my favor, but I have to change my morning eating habits NOW.

So... I'd welcome healthy protein-based breakfasts - I know there have been several threads on this, but I'm fishing for something that might be new or that I might have missed. Ewww, egg-white omelets I won't eat.

I like eggs; like yogurt (but yup, it's the full-fat kind (or Greek), but I don't hate the fat-free, except that then it usually has sugar in it and I don't like the fake-sugar kind); am careful about having fiber and whole grains, but there you go again with the carbs I have to watch; have often had leftover meat for breakfast, but that gets old quick and usually ends up involving mayonnaise to make it palatable (ham salad, chicken salad, etc.).

Help? Most important thing for me know is lowering the fat with something I can stick with longterm, and not having too much startch/sugar. TIA!!!

Make your own Yogurt Dawn. Several years ago while watching

Ina Garten make granola and yogurt I decided to give it a try and now I wouldn't have it any other way. I started with this one using orange juice and then went on to doing it with what ever fruit was in season and cheap. But our favorite really is the orange juice. And Marilyn Fl did her usual digging and found that when the whey is drained out it drops the calorie count by a huge amount. I don't add the raisins or nuts but we love to have small bits of what ever fruit I'm using added in. In this case, small pieces of orange segments. And don't skip lunch. Eat small amounts of food often. And I always have her basic granola recipe in a container in the fridge.
Orange Yogurt

Line a sieve with cheesecloth or paper towels and suspend it over a bowl. Pour the yogurt into the sieve and allow it to drain, refrigerated, for 3 hours or overnight.

Place the thickened yogurt into a medium bowl and stir in the raisins, walnuts, vanilla, honey, and orange zest. Thin with orange juice until it is a desirable consistency. Garnish with sections of orange, orange zest, raisins, or walnuts and serve.

Here is one I like for breakfast, and you could add more protein in the

form of some chicken or pork. I am one of those people whose stomach doesn't look at the clock, I would just as soon have a bowl of chili for breakfast than eggs and toast. What about some little mini meat patties with tzaziki sauce to dip them in. Or even have a whole wheat pita filled with grilled chicken and veggies, etc. See what I mean! smileys/smile.gif

Or this one, you can halve it, or it freezes great without the tofu or eggs in it. Just add them when you are ready to reheat some.

My Soups Soups And Stews

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method12 cups beef broth (I use Beef Better Than Boullion) -- made according to directions on label
3 boneless pork chops, fat removed and julienned
4 tablespoons garlic and red chile paste
4 tablespoons soy sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons ground white pepper
4 eggs -- beaten
1 cup sliced shittake mushrooms
4 ounces very thinly sliced fresh button mushrooms -- optional
1 can sliced bamboo shoots -- chopped
2 cans diced water chestnuts
1/2 cup white vinegar
2 teaspoons sesame oil (1-2 teaspoons)
1 bunch green onions -- thinly sliced
1 bunch bok choy -- leaves chopped and ribs thinly sliced
1/2 large zucchini -- quarted lengthwise and thinly sliced
4 cups green cabbage -- coarsely shredded

Bring stock to a simmer, add soy sauce, pork, mushrooms, 1/4 cup white vinegar, and chile paste, simmer for 10 minutes.
Add meat, pepper, bamboo, water chestnuts, bok choy, cabbage, zuke, green onions, sesame oil and mushrooms, simmer 10 min.
Pour the eggs in a very thin stream over the surface. Let sit for a minute before stirring. Gently stir eggs into the soup mixture.
At this point you can let the soup rest for an hour or more before serving. When ready to serve, bring back up to a simmer and add
the remaining 1/4 cup of white vinegar. Taste for seasoning and add more vinegar or white pepper if desired. You may top with
fried crunchy won ton strips if desired.

NOTES : To this basic soup, you can add any ingredients you would like, perhaps baby corn, straw mushrooms, or tofu. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

my standard every single day... yogurt, fruit and chopped almonds

I finely chop 1/3rd of a banana, 1/4 of an apple, half an orange. Top it with 1/3 cup plain yogurt and 2 tbl. chopped toasted almonds.

If you like things sweeter, you could always drizzle a little honey on it... or add some mini chocolate chips (which is amazing), but let's show a LITTLE restraint, shall we (she says to herself *g*)

I think you're being too hard on yourself. If your cholestrol, etc is good why not eat what you

enjoy for breakfast and just cut back a bit on butter, cream cheese, etc and perhaps whole milk on the oatmeal instead of half and half, lol?

They say if you can do something for three weeks, it becomes acceptable. I did that putting 1% milk in my coffee instead of a higher fat milk/cream. I just couldn't get rid of the sugar, although I have cut it down to 1 1/2 t per about 10 oz cup. And since my coffee is half milk, the 1% milk made a big difference. (okay, I don't really like coffee and actually give it up completely months at a time)

You could do fruit and yogurt for lunch if you get hungry. I also eat a lot of cheese, butter, cream, etc and have excellent cholestrol, etc readings. As you say, good genes. Unfortunately, I have some not so good genes in other areas, lol.

I know what you mean about yogurt and non-fat, etc. I hate artificial sweetener in anything. When I discovered the Activia plain yogurt that is low fat, not non-fat, it was a revelation. I can eat it by the spoonful, but really enjoy it mixed with a little of their vanilla yogurt on strawberries and other fruits. I think it is more filling than the non-fat, and certainly tastes better.

Congratulations on the excercise. You sound as though you're managing quite well.

That's true... I do have to watch the sugar and carbs though. Having

diabetes increases your chances for heart/artery problems, but so far, so good.

Dawn, here is a book I just ordered, I was told this will help and start a healthy life change

"The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Recipe Book: Protect Yourself and Your Family from Heart Disease, Arthritis, Diabetes, Allergies - and More"
Jessica K. Black; Spiral-bound

I bought this from Amazon

TOO

Here is another book to help, because it can be thyroid related

THYROID SOLUTION
http://www.rodalecustomerservice.com/

Another thing to remember and this is so so so important

Consider avoiding all wheat, glucose, and sugar.

The anti-inflammatory book is special because cravings and health issues (most) is caused by what we eat.

I am excited about these books, I have seen the results from the anti-inflammatory book and the results were impressive

The thyroid solution, for me, is because I have hypothyroidism I am loosing my hair, dry skin, and I've been told this book helps in most reversals of thyroid related issues.

Thyroid conditions go HIGHLY undiagnosed and the root of most health issues stem from the thyroid, I use to scoff at this and finally requested I be checked, went to 2 doctors (each did NOT know each other) and the results were the same: Hypothyroidism, and MY doctor was honest and said he would NEVER have thought to check for it.

So I hope this helps, I haven't received either book, I just order both this week.
