My power was off for nearly 24 hours

In London, eggs are sold in the regular food aisles. They feel they are hermetically sealed.

I leave butter and eggs sit out on a counter over night and sometimes until the day after that when I'm planning to bake (and then got lazy). No one's died so far...although that may not be the level of reassurance you're looking for. Cheese, yogurt, bread products, condiments, all should be okay. I don't buy much meat so can't help in that department.

I'd be a little squeamish on the eggs but everthing else, I'd keep. I'm still alive, too. Barely but

that's not the fault of what I've eaten.

I do wonder about eggs. In Europe we see them sitting on counters all day. I just made my first Caesar by coddling the egg as I am just unsure about egg safety.

Butter....I keep out in a pot for a few days at a time so it's soft for spreading.

Whenever power goes off, I just do not open the fridge at all, pray, then let it all cool down again without opening the fridge. Freezer food will be fine.

I bought ground meat for tacos, and I had egg whites in a jar...

I was going to use the leftover egg whites (12!) from Super Bowl day pudding to make smb for a valentines cake to share with neighbors. Ditto tacos to share. Now I don’t know.

I also thought grocery eggs were washed, which removed a coating that allowed natural ones to sit out at room temp.

Eggs are definitely OK.

Did you open and close the fridge a lot? I think that list is REALLY a CYA list.
I'd keep all the cheese--if it "spoils" it gets moldy and you would see that..

We've had many power outs the last 18 months, our longest was from a major snow

storm. We were out for three days. Our freezers held fine and could have gone a forth day. It is suggested not to open your freezers during a power out. Mine are stuffed so there is a lot of cold to keep things cold. Refrigerator was at its limit at three days, because we had to open and close it at least 4 times a day. But we survived it and so did the food.

Maria, I'd dump the egg whites and the ground meat if it is room temp

I'd keep the whole eggs for sure- keep cheeses and most everything else. If you have something like a opened can of chopped tomatoes in the fridge I'd dump that. Milk, etc I'd dump that as well.

We have a lot of power outages here.

Something for the next time

If your freezer is packed enough open it only once to take out a large hunk of meat- like a ham or a turkey if you have one frozen. Put that into the fridge and it will help keep the temp down for much longer. I keep blue ice in my freezer and also transfer that to the fridge at the same time. Then, if the big hunk of meat thaws to the point of needing to use it, cook it on your grill or in a gas oven if you have one.

Hurricanes and ice storms in NC have us without power many times. We would put ice

in the fridge--or dry ice if we could get some.

Thanks all. I did toss a few things, and I wonder about the mayo, but kept the rest

Mostly I’m ticked at my bankrupt power company who I’m guessing left us to rot vs pay overtime to get our power on. Everyone except three small streets, mine included, had power restored by 8pm. Our small three residential streets didn’t get it back till 9am the following day. That’s longer than when a power line went down in the last storm.

Do let us know if you die. We can hone our understandings here. Does your home insurance cover

such losses? I didn't know until too late, that mine did.

Ours in Eastern Canada, was off for at least 2 days during that Ohio grid mess. Significant losses then, but it was surprising how cold those appliances stay inside when they are not opened.
