My Saturday Six

1 - Humid, humid, humid - don't feel like eating so we got hot dogs at the local stand. Definately decided mustard (cheap, fluorescent yellow!) is my favorite topping and favorite condiment overall. Note to self: good, because I heard the turmeric in it helps stablize blood sugar.

2 - I picked more blueberries this a.m. - boy, was it mosquito-y... probably the last week of the season. I only got 3 quarts, so they won't last long. Maybe jam this time, and maybe a pie? And maybe I'll clean the bottom half of the freezer so I can do the "cookie sheet" thing ;0) On the way home, bought more fresh-picked corn. I forgot how good it is when you eat it the same day it's picked. I just love summer vegetables.

3 - I'll have to try Marilyn's herbed chicken thighs she posted this morning as soon as we use the grill again.

4 - Having fun experimenting with my hot peppers. Had a light supper of spicy corn chowder.

5 - Breakfast on the run this a.m.... up and out early this morning to take old monitors to the recycling center. Dunkin' Donut's sausage biscuit is fantastic!! Boy, it's a healthy eating day, eh?

6 - I found some old book purchases from the spring that I haven't had a chance to look at yet - "Seasoned in the South: Recipes from Crook's Corner" by Bill Smith, and "Roasting: A Simple Art" by Barbara Kafka. I'll have to look them over soon and post something that turns out good.

Sooo funny, I'm doing some deep cleaning and the Kafka book is one I decided I could live

without. I just retrieved it to reconsider, but she roasts everything at such a high temperature that one had better have good ventilation and a very good self-cleaning oven.

So funny, it took me a long time to finish my post...Sorry I did not add to your thread! smileys/smile.gif

I am the same with yellow mustard and hot dogs.

One time Bubba and I went to see a movie in the downtown mall in San Diego called Horton Plaza. It's an upscale outdoors mall. They used to, maybe still do, have early matinees on the weekends, like 10-ish. We had imbibed a little too much the night before and definitely needed some nourishment. There was a hot dog/bratwurst place next to the theater and they would let you bring food in the theater that was purchased in the Plaza. We decided to split a brat and had it with yellow mustard. We ate it while we were watching the movie. When the lights came on, my shirt was covered in bright bright bright yellow mustard. There wasn't anything I could do about it, so I had to walk through the outdoors mall, which was now teaming with hoards of people with a completely mustard stained t-shirt. I was mortified. I wanted to tell everyone that I walked past that it happened in a dark theatre and I didn't know it was there...lol. But it's still my favorite with a hot dog, corn dog or brat.

My Six

had a delightful coffee and spinach/feta croissant sitting outside at this new great bakery we have in Anchorage. visited with friends just back from France.

took the dog to the doggie park and she practiced her swimming. I may rename her Esther Williams.

Scored at Costco with Fresh Figs, Pluots and Italian Plums.
Scored at Farmer's Markets with fresh beans, pattypan squash beets and lovely carrots. will be pickling carrot/zucchini/green beans in long spears for a "bloody mary mix" should be fun and colorful. I have both yellow and green, very firm narrow squash that should work OK.

picked the last of th rhubarb and the dill flowers. ready for canning tomorrow!

mailing a birthday package to stepdaughter in Washington. included is a jamming kit of freezer containers, a box of pectin and a recipe for blackerry jam. I will cry if she doesn't pick some and at least try. I have success with just freezing the jam, after it sets overnight so she doesn't need to bother with the water bath.

Wedding reception tonight. Such a lovely Saturday.

Sounds nice. I love blackberry jam

made from Washington (Marion?) blackberries. I just had some tonight on my biscuits that we had with the corn chowder.

My Weekend Six, and a recipe!

Yesterday was the SF Streetfood Festival, it was a blast! So incredibly packed with people, like a Disneyland for food without fastpasses. Ate some amazing things: 4505 chicharrones, spicy eggplant pocket pie, Dirty Popcorn, vanilla creme brûlée, Jaime Lauren's hot dog with chile ketchup and Guinness mustard, Slanted Door's veggie steamed buns, black bubble tea, cheddar poundcake, watermelon agua fresca, La Paloma cocktails and mango chile caprahainas. Please don't judge me! These were small bites except the hot dog which was *massive* and worth the 45 minute wait!

However having 3 La Palomas was 2 too many! Especially when my neighbor plays rap at 8 am on Sunday morning. Seriously dude! Take pity!

La Paloma:
2 parts reposado tequila
1 part lime
2 parts Squirt or sparkling grapefruit soda (I love Squirt!)
rim of sea salt

The other night I roasted chicken in milk, but used coconut milk instead of cows milk, and it was fantastic! I had a bit for a snack last night with brown rice and the flavors really perfumed the meat: cinnamon, citrus, sage, thyme, Rosemary, yum yum yum. Tonight I'm going to use the meat in some fashion, maybe a pot pie with biscuit dough on top? I still have some sweet potatoes left!

I also have those delicious beans. When I get back from the movie (District 9, in 20 minutes!!) I'm going to make stock with the chicken carcass and use that with the beans for a quick slightly chunky soup. Perfect for this fog and mist.

But first, popcorn for breakfast! We're going to the Kabuki Sundance theater with it's upscale concessions and all green theater ( ecologically, of course!)

have a great weekend!!

Can I borrow one from next week? My 7th was the Banana Split Cake (pix)

The additions of the chocolate and strawberry flavorings worked perfectly. Two tablespoons of instant chocolate pudding mix and a dark chocolate truffle, melted ;o) for the chocolate layer... and a couple of teaspoons of strawberry jello and a dab of pink food color paste for the strawb, and no pineapple for the yellow... just cake.

I was going to cover the sides with the whipped cream mix (I used 3 parts Cool Whip to 1 part prepared instant banana cream pudding) but I decided to let the layers show through.

For the sauce between the layers I spread the chocolate layer with some of the pudding mixture and layered chopped bananas (cooked and mixed with a little honey); on top of the white layer, I spread some chopped strawberries (also coooked and mixed with a little honey) and then topped it with the strawb cake layer. Fussy, but worth it. It was delicious, if I do say so myself! It was baked, and I did it!

And here it is half-gone!

Here is the link, and my tweaks>>

Substitutions:
*1 can of coconut milk for the cows milk
* Instead of 2 lemons zested, I zested 1 lemon, 1 orange and 1/2 a lime. Hey, it's what I had!

Additions:
* 1 t fish sauce
* a sprinkle of rosemary/lavender salt

The curdling problem with the milk was completely eliminated and the coconut milk gave the sauce such delicious richness and thickness. I did spooon off a little of the separated fat but the sauce completely reincorporated into a nice creamy texture with a second or two of whisking. And the leftovers, wow.

I do an orange-pineapple cake --- this frosting would be perfect for your cake:

Mix 1 small can crushed pineapple with 1 large box vanilla instant pudding and let it rest for 5 minutes or so to start thickening. Stir in one medium container Cool Whip.

Note: I usually use real whipped cream, beat to soft peaks, then add the pineapple/pudding mixture and beat until spreadable.
