My Saturday Six

It's been raining for 3 days straight so when it stopped I was all set to go out and do some cleaning up before winter (ouch, that's a hard word to say). Decided instead to go to the cemetery and pick up the pots so they don't get taken away by whoever, over the - there's that word again - winter. Ended up smack in the middle of the traffic from the SU/Pitt football game so it took longer than expected so I didn't get a chance to do much else this afternoon.

On my way, I was driving along, enjoying the sun, and thump. I looked in my rear-view mirror, and saw that I had hit a squirrel. It was pretty much an instant death, and I felt so bad the rest of the day. He/she ran right under my car as I was driving, and there was nothing I could do, but still...

Happier thoughts - went shopping for some candy supplies last night to either make the Halloween gingerbread house or some scary cupcakes. Either way, they'll be fun to make with DS or DD or both. Licorice whips, gum drops, dark chocolate wafers - and I didn't eat even one... yaaayyy.

For an eary dinner, DH, DD, and I went for a ride to see the fall foliage and take pictures (leaves are PERfect right now). Also got a few pie pumpkins, cider, donut holes, a couple of bottles of apple wine(?), pears, cheese, and squash. Ok, think we're all set now for the fall. I just love it when it turns crisp and cool enough that you can actually DO stuff outside.

Plans for tomorrow are to make Pad Thai with Tangerine Beef (sans ginger - so sick of ginger lately). And will dump or freeze lingering other leftover meals to have when I'm not so sick of them anymore. They seem to multiply in the refrigerator.

Maybe will also try a pineapple recipe before I make one for next week's party. I'm thinking about "fruity nachos", coconut-pineapple ice cream, or pineapple-macadamia nut cake.

It is getting to the end of our farmer's market so I will need to be coming up with a new venue. I think the lunch delivery idea is going to work. It will be a lot more work than I initially thought, but a steady income will make it worth it.

I roasted a turkey for dinner tonight. I have been baking them at 450 unstuffed. I makes for a great and easy weekend dinner, and great leftovers for lunches during the week. It ends up in a green chili for it's finale.

I am in charge of the school's craft show, and it is stressing me out. Hopefully this year, I will actually get something done for the show.

I bought a boneless leg of lamb today from one of the vendors and will be making the Frugal Gourmet's gyros recipe. I searched high and low in all of his cookbooks and could never find it. I recently came across a stained and yellowed piece of paper with said recipe on it. Yay! I will be making homemade naan and the fixings to go with it.

I am making cinnamon chip scones and vanilla scones for breakfast tomorrow morning. I will have a very happy family.

I just fell asleep sitting here. Good night all.

My Weekend Six~

~The family went up to Green Bay to watch the Packers today. They won't get home till around 2 AM tomorrow, so I've had the house to myself.

~Finishing off Dorie Greenspan's Spicy Vietnamese Chicken Noodle Soup...yummy

~Made my first dish with farro...Farro Salad with Roasted Vegetables and Marinated Mushrooms. So delish...from a cookbook called The Elixir of Life that I bought after a local food demo by the author

~Making Fat Witch brownies. I want to add some Heath bar chunks, but know I'm the only one who will like them. Do I really want the whole pan for myself?

~Our sweet Lab celebrated her 11th birthday yesterday! Lambeau got many carrot, sweet potato and marshmallow treats (she has inflammatory bowel disease and has a special diet smileys/smile.gif)

~I'm off to volunteer at the Memory Walk later this morning...both my mom and aunt have Alzheimer's

Have a great Sunday!!!

Lizzy, would you mind posting the spicy Vietnamese chicken noodle soup?

That sounds so good and I have lots of basil and mint in the garden still.

I think it was around a 14 pound Butterball turkey.

I baked it for about 45 minutes, but it could have used another 10 minutes or so. Then I just let it rest for about 15 minutes and make dinner. I season it well with seasoning salt and garlic salt. It turns out really good with this method, really moist breast meat. I also bake it with the drumsticks towards the back of the oven.

It's from Dorie Greenspan's new cookbook...

...and there are no recipes on the web to share. I'm faxing a copy to another friend later today, so if you have a fax, I could send it to you, too. Just PM me.

Dawn, there's a reason I call myself curious. I'm not sure about the difference between gyros and

souvlaki, but there's a souvlaki recipe on page 282 in The Frugal Gourmet Cooks Three Ancient Cuisines and I'm wondering if that's the same recipe? Here it is... Or do you grind the lamb or cut thin strips?

Souvlaki
Makes 8 sandwiches

2 lb lean lamb cut into 1-inch square cubes

Marinade:
1/2 c olive oil
1 c red wine
1 tsp salt
freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp whole dried mint, crushed by hand
3 cloves garlic, crushed

8 loaves Pita Bread with Olive oil,

Garnishes
purple onions, sliced paper thin
tomatoes, ripe and sliced thin
plain yogurt

Marinate cubes of meat in a large bowl. Mix 2 or 3 times during a 2 hour period.
Place on wooden skewers and broil, turning once, until tender but still at bit pink on the inside.
Serve in a grilled pita loaf with onions, tomatoes and yogurt on top.

Note: This dish is also just great with pork.

This is my exact recipe. I wrote it down while watching his program

and never saw it in any of his cookbooks. I called it gyros, but it is the exact recipe that you posted. No wonder I could never find it. It was very good and I am looking forward to making it again. Thanks Curious, now I know I will never have to worry about losing it again.

Is there a reason that there aren't any recipes on the web?

I looked at your blog thinking you might have it there, and you didn't post it. Then I googled it and couldn't find it anywhere else either. I just went to Amazon and looked inside her book and found it there. I copied it down and I am dying to try this. I sounds so good and looks great. I was just wondering why it wasn't anywhere. Thanks!

There's a new cook along for her new cookbook...

...and the publisher has requested that all bloggers testing out her recipes refrain from posting them on-line. I'm guessing it might cut into sales...

Sunday-night Six

1. Dawn_MO's post now has me craving roast turkey with green chili...so maybe I'll have to do something about that this week!

2. Made pork tenderloin rolled in orange peel and fennel seed, doused with white wine. Not bad--baked along with onion and apple wedges. However: apple wedges have to dry roast... I'm sure everyone knows this but me (and I forgot).

3. Spending a fair amount of time in the next few weeks shuttling up and down the Hudson river towns, searching for an apartment for my brother. Tarrytown was my first stop, and I would move there in a heartbeat. It probably helps that it's fall, and the riverbanks are green, red, and gold...and that Coffee Labs on Main Street makes a macchiato worth traveling from the city for...

4. Can someone with Corningware tell me if there's a really discernible difference between that and LeCreuset? I'd love to get a 3.5-quart Dutch oven, but my frugal side scolds, "Good grief! You can get 14 pieces for a third of the price." Do I just need an amateur's casserole set?

5. Couscous with chopped parsley, garlic, tomatoes, roasted red pepper, chickpeas, and lemon reminds me of Israel, for some reason.

6. I wish we had a wafflemaker.
