My son Joe proposed to his girlfriend Jessy last night!! Any Ideas for an engagement party?

The party is going to be at my home. I estimate about 20 people. Also there is a possibility that

Jessy's bother who will be home for a brief time off from Afganistan (active duty) may be here too. I am looking for a meal menu and a dessert menu.

I expect the party to begin approximately 5:30 pm on a Saturday and last through until 9:00 - 10:00 pm.

I am a little new at this, and Jessy's family will be there too (very very nice people)

Since I know you're into Italian food, I would stick with that, as a way of welcoming them

into your family. Lasagna, manicotti, antipasti platters, whatever your family favorites are. Dessert could be a really nice selection of biscotti, cookies and bars.

The best suggestion I could make, since it's a lot of people, is to hire someone to come in, even if it's a teenage neighbor or someone's housekeeper, and help serve and clean up, so that you are free to be the hostess instead of being in the kitchen the whole time.

I am not going to do Italian, I don't know what Jessy's family likes and with people mingling about

I think Italian will get messy. I also know her brother, while on leave, enjoys a really good home cooked meal and I want to go that way. A beef brisket was suggested and I think that's a good idea but I'm thinking buffet style with lots of food(s) and/or meal concepts.

Not sure what part of the country so not sure what 'homestyle' would be but here goes

Easy buffet style menu most of which is easy to make ahead and hold on a buffet:

Puff pastry cheese straws or gougeres

Romaine lettuce with pears, spiced nuts and blue cheese and a vinaigrette

Cheese & ham stuffed chicken breasts with a sherried mushroom cream sauce (sliced)

Pork tenderloin rubbed with cumin and mustard served with a pan sauce and a chutney

Brisket with Lee Bailey's lemon horseradish sauce

a nice potato casserole - there are several posted here but also classics like au gratin or Barefoot Contessa's potato & fennel au gratin

green beans either with roasted sweet potatoes or butternut squash and a brown sugar pecan sauce or with the pecan gremolata that is posted here somewhere

high heat roasted winter root vegetables - butternut squash, parsnips, carrots, turnips, cauliflower, shallots, beets

rolls

lemon curd tartlets or lemon squares

marscapone stuffed strawberries drizzled with chocolate

balzano apple cake

Just add ice cream and I'd die for that meal..it is like a 'high tea' too...ohh yum.....

I have been dieting again .......doing well and not going to quit yet but these menus sound so morish!!!!!
