My Weekend Six

I've been wanting to try something new for the bake sale yesterday - nothing with frosting (messy), nothing that there are already tons of (leftover at end and we end up giving it away), and nothing difficult (as I have always said, I am bake-challenged). So, just made my basic sugar cookie and added 1/2 cup of dark sweet cherries in a can (never saw THOSE before!), chopped and drained, and 1/4 cup white chocolate morsels. I piped a chocolate heart on them (love doing that with melted chocolate wafers) and they turned out really good, and sold out quickly. Ah...

DH and I were chili tasters at a charity chili cook-off yesterday. The winner was from a local school district (BOCES) in the area, and had - pineapple - in it. It was very good; tart, sweet, and a little hot. It was a fun activity, and a cheap lunch for a small donation!

I may try Meryl's Orange Butter Cake for a book club meeting on Wednesday night. My local library has tote bags of books that you check out, 10 books - all the same - and then you return them in 3 weeks. Great idea, huh?! Gotta check out what this month's is, for next time. My group is reading The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman right now. So so.

Making chicken almondine with jasmine/coconut rice/mango (love that mango-chipotle vinaigrette), Eva's butternut squash soup (although I roasted the squash first), and cheesy Brussels sprouts for dinner tonight.

Looking forward to the fish dinners starting this week. 'Tis the season!

My weekend six

Lovely birthday dinner Friday night. Our family tradition for
the grown ups is that they order what they want and I cook it!!
So my daughter wanted Tortilla soup, oven fried chicken and baked potatoes and her favorite cake - my passover
strawberry shortcake. I added brocoli to the menu.

Last night we attended a dinner hosted by a top Israeli
pastry chef. The guest cook was a woman who had come
close to the final 3 in the Israel version of master chef. She specializes in Venezualain (sp?) cooking.
I had a chowder which included shrimps, scallops, corn, and quail egg. It was so delicious. For the main course, I had Asado Negro which had a sauce based on cane sugar which was out of this world also. Her dessert was a kind of a chocolate bisquit cake which was also good. Now we
are waiting for her to open her own restaurant.
And I am going back to a restricted diet to get rid of these
extra pounds!!!
