1.Friday morning, I froze the sofrito I made in the crockpot Thursday.

2.Made the chocolate cake part of my daughters birthday cake. My daughter's choice was a strawberry shortcake. The grandkids get to choose another cake - my granddaughter(5) told me how to make an elephant cake with the head, legs and tail from a chocolate cake covered with

blue frosting and the strawberry shortcake would be the body.

3. Went to a lecture on Rome

4. Cooked chicken soup and the shortcake part

of today's birthday meal.

5. Today finished the cake - it was a riot, made

baked breaded chicken, baked potatoes, salad and matza balls for the soup as per the request.

6. Enjoyed the dinner, sent them off with care packages and am happily about to collapse and become a couch potato!

I love your sofrito! My weekend six...

I'm leaving in a few minutes for my parents for a few days of R&R, can't wait to see them.

The best part is my dear pal from SFe/LA is going with me, I haven't seen her since Easter.

Mom plans to feed us well: paella, fondue, huevos rancheros and her multigrain pancakes with blueberry syrup. Tonight is a meat pie from Canada, I forget what she called it. Yum!

Besides football tomorrow, I plan to go on long rambling walks with my friend and her darling dog, and knit a new sock for my ex's little girl, who emails me a lot and is excited about her soft saphire blue socks.

I hope to return rested, a bloom in my cheeks, and legs stretched. That's probably not six but there you are!

Hope you all have a great weekend.

my six -- sigh --

Went to costco today to get 2 rotisserie chickens. It was lunchtime, so we stopped in at Manny Hattens where he had matzo ball soup and a roast turkey sandwich. I had the "downtown ruben" (MEAT!!!!)

poached some chicken breasts with a teasac full of herbs de provence -- smells so good I'll even be happy about it.

jello, jello, hell o...

bread machine working overtime with blah, white bread -- still, smells wonderful.

tomorrow's superbowl meal -- chicken and mashed potatoes. Think I will have to sneak out for ice cream

AAARRRGGHHH! Can't wait for Tuesday!!

I love reading these every week. It's fun to see what other people are doing

in other parts of the world, from Joanie's balmy adventures on the yachts, to Ang's walks in the snowy woods with her dog. And blue elephant cakes with the grandkids - love that!

My Saturday/weekend six are comparibly pretty boring again this week:

1 - I only bought one very small plateful of mint iced brownies at the bake sale this a.m. (That's an great improvement for me!)

2 - Managed to find a few good buys on cookbooks (I need more of those like I need the mint brownies, but they were nice ones). I'll post what I bought when I have them in front of me - they're out in the cold, cold car right now.

3 - Brought home a Pizza Hut thin-crust pizza for dinner as I was pooped. First time I ever ordered a pizza online! Ugh though - like toppings on a Saltine cracker. Next time, pan pizza.

4 - DH bought a rotisserie chicken from our favorite grocery store. Plans for something with that for dinner tomorrow afternoon. Maybe chicken and dumplings (have one of Dawn_MO's earlier posts on the brain now).

5 - Thankful I'm not in D.C. or Maryland today! It's cold, but you don't have to shovel "cold". Nice night for a fire. Hope all that have power and are reading this in VA, MD, and PA are safe.

6 - Making cornbread and chili tomorrow for tomorrow night - traditional Superbowl-watching food. We are just having my cousin, her dh, and kids over - a small but cozy group. If I have time I'll make a corn/black bean dip that everyone seems to like (but for some reason I only make it around Superbowl time); probably also guacamole (the "good" fat that seems to lower my blood sugar). 'Seems I like the food and the commercials much better than the game!

Happy Sunday, everyone!

My six...

1. Went to Chinatown for a Chinese New Year celebration. Saw several lion dances, ate some fried noodles and freshly made jin doi (sesame mochi balls with black sugar filling).

2. As we walked back to the car, we saw a whole 'nother side of Chinatown that never existed before! Chinatown at night used to be a scary, seedy place, full of drunks, homeless and hookers. But the city has been trying to revitalize Chinatown, and encouraging new businesses to the area. We walked down one street, and was very surprised to see several nightclubs, with tons of people standing in line to get in! Even saw some Capoeira street dancers.

3. Got a new haircut today, with color and highlights. And only paid $100! What a deal!

4. May attempt to go snowboarding in March. We'll see about that smileys/smile.gif

5. Hubby roasted a turkey for dinner tonight, with all the fixings - stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce. Yum yum yum.

6. Planning on going shopping tomorrow, while hubby goes out to watch the Super Bowl smileys/smile.gif Love the empty malls smileys/smile.gif

Trip to Canada being planned for the snowboarding, and doesn't every city have it's own Chinatown?

Whenever we travel, we make it a point to visit the local Chinatowns. We've been to ones in San Francisco, Vancouver, Canada, Yokohama, Japan.....

Our Chinatown has open market stalls for fresh produce, little grocery stores that cater to the various cuisines of Hawaii (Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, etc.), as well as lots of dim sum restaurants and pho restaurants.

It's a regular stop for weekly grocery shopping trips, but we never go there at night!

No Chinatown here, but it sounds fun - in fact, I've

never been to a Chinatown, anywhere! I thought Chinatown was only in San Francisco, but then again I don't get around much ;o)

Weekend six

1. Trying to motivate myself to clean the house before the superbowl revelers arrive. Just family but still.

2. It is snowing again. My in-laws just moved here from San Diego and are so sick of the snow. I keep telling them that this is very unusual.

3. Still loving the ruby red grapefruit and PW's salsa.

4. I was planning on trying a bunch of new appetizer recipes today, but reconsidered and went with the traditional Superbowl Chili spread instead. I am glad I did.

5. The kids don't have school tomorrow, so a nice relaxing day in store for us.

6. Bub finally got the "possum" out of the garage...yuck!

Weekend Six:

1. Shovel snow.
2. Shovel snow.
3. Shovel snow.
4. Shovel snow.
5. Shovel snow.
6. Shovel snow.

Can I just tell you how very sore we are? If you could hear us you would think we are 99 years old. Every time we move it hurts--and we are fairly good at regular exercise.

Superbowl dinner canceled. No plows into the neighborhood streets yet. We can hear them out on the main drag, college parking lot and beltway. I am secretly hoping that they don't make it here til tomorrow afternoon. I can use another snow day off!

The snow is amazingly gorgeous. Today was bright, sunny and 34 so some of it has melted off the small tree branches. We measured in several locations and came up with 20-21" so no records broken. However, there is more in the forecast for Tuesday...........

Let's see, do I have Six?

* Made tasty but runny lemon curd
* Made more sourdough ciabatta, better hole distribution this time
* Made more Butternut Squash Risotto, Boy, I love that stuff!
* Went to SF for brunch/lunch with grown kids at Beach Chalet right on Ocean Beach Hwy. We scored a corner window table! (I had Dungeoness Crab Benedict)
* Glorious SF Bay Area Day! Everyone was out enjoying the almost 60 deg weather, walking dogs, running, sailing, para-sailing, kite flying, baby strollering, etc !
* Back home just in time for Super Bowl Game

I was making it to freeze and use later. Now that I have all those good suggestions I will not

feel as though I failed. This week I will try again with a longer cooking time. Need to pick up some more lemons at my MIL's house tomorrow.

Wow, I thought they were everywhere!

It's definitely a cultural experience! They cater to our large Asian immigrant population, so you'll often find produce you won't see in any of the regular supermarkets.

It's crowded, noisy and definitely interesting. When my son was in preschool, one of their field trips was a visit to Chinatown. The kids loved seeing live catfishes, pig heads in the butcher cases, and whole roasted chickens (head and feet and all) hanging in store windows. Too funny!

The most recent Chinatown we traveled to was in Yokohama, Japan. Their Chinatown caters mostly to tourists, so no produce or butchers. Mostly Chinese trinkets, restaurants, a few grocery-type mini stores. Different from ours, but still fun to see smileys/smile.gif
