Nothing too difficult here - hamburgs on the grill along with ranch potato salad and iced tea

I made peach muffins yesterday and they are so moist. I added some cardamom to the batter, and it made for a very good breakfast this a.m. with scrambled eggs

Tomorrow DH and I are going to go on a wine tour in the Finger Lakes - packing a picnic and peach muffins will go in there with I don't know what else, but will more than likely come back with a couple of bottles of white zinfindel and spicy red.

I made another steal at a garage sale this afternoon - a tall, etched-glass (I love etched-glass) pitcher for $2 and a butter cutter for 25 cents

Really getting anxious for blueberry season to get here but I'll have to wait a couple of more months I think (

Trying to decide if I really want to go to a benefit and see Julia and Juliet and basically all the chocolate you can eat! Seeing that we need to call a plumber on Monday because the bathtub leak is getting worse (I have no idea how a bathtub can leak, but every time someone takes a shower, the corner gets all wet), I have an idea the money will probably go there instead.

It's been fun shopping for my barbecue raffle basket - I still would like to find a reasonably priced apron, but everything else is all set

Happy spring weekend everyone!

My Weekend Six

Finally got around to writing about my dinner with John Besh (see the link). Um yeah, that dinner was a year ago. Oh well. It's done now. Finally.

Tomorrow there's a heritage breed pig event in town called Cochon555. Five chefs, five different pigs. I've been asked to be one of the judges. I've can't wait! Think I'll skip breakfast. smileys/wink.gif

I've been private cheffing now for six weeks. Took last week off b/c clients were out of town. Back to it on Monday. Still need to plan my menu.

Catering an island wedding end of June. Trolled Goodwill today looking for platers. Turned up zilch. Dangerous stop in the book section = five new books. Justifying this purchase with the fact that one of them is called, "Cooking for a Crowd", written the the former editor of Food and Wine.

Dating someone new. Many years ago he owned several restaurants. Today he sends me a recipe for lobster risotto, saying, "We should make this together." Hmm...I think I'll keep him around for a while. smileys/smile.gif

Weekend Six?

1. My weekend started Thursday evening when I got home from work. I was assigned a red velvet cake as dessert for Friday night Prom Dinner for 14 kids. Prom is so expensive for the kids my friend volunteered her home for dinner. Not having any kids of my own it was a great honor to be asked. I made a test cake earlier in the week and the young lady hosting the dinner approved (school colors are red and white). Can't tell you how much fun I had helping! We had 7 adult servers so we plated dinner in the kitchen, each took two plates and served the entire crowd at once. They had a great time.

2.Dinner at home last night was Shrimp Cakes with Diavolo Sauce from the Cuisine Tonight Menus book. It turned out far better than expected. Pencil thin roasted asparagus, fresh from the farmers market, was a perfect accompaniment.

3. Dessert was Minted Strawberry Shortcakes. Strawberries were also from the farmers market and the mint from my herb garden. DH asked for seconds! (recipe from Fine Cooking).

4. Breakfast this morning is supposed to be scrambled TURKEY eggs! Obviously turkeys lay eggs but I never really thought about them doing so. The egg man had turkey eggs so I had to buy some just for the novelty. He said they taste just like chicken eggs. They are light brown with speckles and a bit larger than a jumbo chicken egg. I was going to scramble up a couple and serve them with some left over asparagus from dinner last night.

5. Picnic planned for this afternoon and I'm bringing the baked beans (from Epicurious) and the beet and orange salad I posted earlier. Unfortunately it started raining yesterday afternoon, sever thunderstorms over night and rain for the next two days! Guess we will be picnicing indoors!

6. Morning bike ride cancelled due to the above mentioned rain smileys/frown.gif I was really looking forward to it too.

Have a great weekend-or what's left of it!

I've got the perfect apron for you,

brand new, leftover from an event...black, reads: Well Done, in small blue letters across the chest area. You may have it for your raffle basket if you like...will send you a PM.

Burgers sound good, you just made my dinner descision for me.

I love etched glass too! I have a gorgeous tall glass vase and pitcher, a set. One was from my mother and the other from my father-in-law. I love them. I need to start garage sale shopping next week.

Weekend Six

1. Making my shopping list for the Teacher's Bash. Not too bad at all since I sort of made my menu keeping in mind what I have in the pantry.

2. Printing out 40 fifth-grade-graduation awards today for my son's "graduating" class. He starts middle school next year, yikes!

3. Making my sauces today for the lasagna tomorrow. I am making the Italian sausage called for from scratch.

4. Trying to get organized to be able to go to the Farmer's Market on Wednesday. At the very least I would like to bring some samples in and maybe take orders for Saturday. I was thinking of taking some picnic fare to sample; baked beans, various potato salads, dips, etc.

5. I need to weed the big garden, which I am not looking forward to. It is on a slant (it used to be an old dog pen, and it keeps the deer out) and gives me vertigo if I am not careful.

6. From Dawn's post, going to make burgers on the grill, potato salad and baked beans for dinner. Yum!

Turkey eggs? How were they? My friend had a goose & used to eat the eggs. So big, 1 was perfect.

My Weekend Six

1. Today is my last day at my summer house before I go back home. I haven't cooked for ten days (making my morning cereal doesn't count as cooking, does it?)

2. We went to this very unusual restaurant yesterday. They served French Flambees, which I have never heard of before. It was almost like a pizza, but with a very thin bottom, and the filling/sauce were only made of creme fraiche with herbs and onion. Then she added ham (for DH) and chopped green olives for me as a topping. It tasted great, and we are definitely going back there again some time. She said that this dish is little known outside of the Straasbourg area, but I'm definitely looking into this once I'm back home.

3. I went bananas at my local mustard place (a local farmer here makes his own mustard and sells it at his farm) and bought too much mustard (my mom taught me to buy one in every color when I found something I like. Does that qualify for mustards too?) I desperately need recipes that uses mustard now, or I will have to consider selling some of it on the black market. Is that illegal, btw? *LOL*

4. There is a cafe here that offers cake buffets and a can of coffee for only $10. It's the work of evil. Really, it is.

5. There is also a chocolatiere only two miles from my house. The cafe and the chocolatiere does nothing for my weight. Or rather, they do a lot! *LOL*

6. I think the restaurants here have become better at offering vegetarian options. I have been able to eat vegetarian the entire week ( actually for the 10 days) we have been here. Not only have they put a vegetarian dish on their menu, the vegetarian options have really been great. Great as in a culinary experience. I can't wait to go back here in six weeks (when my summer holiday starts) to explore some more.

Bonus:
7. I found a great French brie at a cheese store here that has garlic and herbs mixed in. It tastes awesome! It's from Réverénd, which is a mainstreen cheese company if I'm not mistaken. This cheese was really good. If you can find it in your store, I hope you'll try it.

Eva, when you get back home why don't you post a stand alone post

for recipes to highlight mustard. I love mustard and have several that I can share but I would love to get more. I would love to see what everyone can share.

Traca, I noticed your posts have been awfully cheery lately smileys/wink.gif

Sur La Table has nice white Italian platters at reasonable prices. Last I checked, a giant oval was around $40; my favorite pieces. They're a bit fragile and mine are chipped here and there, but they've already paid for themselves.

A decadent multiple recipe of lobster risotto would look great on one of them!

Hi Traca! The turkey eggs were obviously larger, the shells were a bit thicker,

they took a bit more prying to get into the and the yolks were more viscous. Other than that they tasted the same!

Traca, how lovely! You've been doing amazing things lately - so excited for you!

And how nice about a new beau, he sounds like a keeper. Lobster risotto sounds so romantic!

Joe, thanks for the tip on platters. Also, did you see this new-to-me book I got called

Cooking for a Crowd? I have been reading it lately and really enjoy it. Today I made a f'ing fabulous rice & beans Mexican-ish salad from that book and couldn't be more pleased. As you know my clients are protein-centric so I substituted barley for the rice. The dressing was incredible. Can't wait to cook from this book some more.

Also, I really appreciate the way the author has this easy going style about entertaining, which is reflected in her recipes. The book is available on Amazon used for a penny.
