N(exactly)FR: need elegant ideas for a holiday centerpiece. Here are last year's >>

I'm picturing an Ina Garten-ish round arrangement of dark red roses---some full open, some buds,

packed in a low round bowl, just full of the roses with low votive candles surrounding it. then accenting the table with maybe dark red wine glasses. Depending on the china, maybe some accent small red plates or napkins, or as in one of the pictures, every other place setting was one with color, so white plates rimmed in silver/gold followed by dark red plates, or Spode china. Or all old fashioned Spode holiday china, but with the very simple flower centerpiece. but then again, I'm so not Martha!

rats.... won't come thru -- says it isn't redirecting properly...?

was it the scene with the bowls of grapes?

Just lovely for outdoors! Unfortunately, this will be at night in a darkened room...lighting is done

at each table with candles, twinkle lights, etc.

A couple of ideas.

1. You could get a big hurricane lamp/vase thingy and fill it with colored glass ball ornaments of different sizes. Cover the base with a swath of red velvet (or gold cloth). Get Christmas plate chargers of red, silver, gold, green, etc., (I've seen these at Target) and set smaller white plates with a gold rim on top of them. Use large colored glass balls for place markers/party favors.

2. This only works if you have access to a collection of vintage costume jewelery, but I've always wanted to do this. Get a table top Christmas tree and decorate it with sparkly vintage jewelery--rhinestone earrings, pins, necklaces, etc. Try to find vintage Christmas plates (like the classic Spode Christmas tree pattern). Use red table linens and get sparkly bracelets for the napkin twists/party favors.

Neither of these might be elegant enough, though. I like Ang's idea of red roses as well. Sounds like fun--let us know what you end up with.

yes...they looked like sugared plums too. Link won't work for me either now. Google Images

for "About a boy" and it will be there...a table scene with Rachel Weitz and Hugh Grant. The lights aren't that well shown...and they added the most to the whole ambience.

A few thoughts...

I like this first pix from HGTV and you can find those deer candle holders everywhere.

You can go tall if you keep the eye level clear: example would be a clear vase with tall branches giving height and fill in with low items around the base. Red berry branches would be pretty for holiday.

Different heights add interest to a table

Table overlays adds dimension

When using a nature based theme real vs. artifical adds warmth and harmony (I would stay away from any artifical flowers/greenry - bad feng shui)

Real pine trimmings and candles are combustible. Really.

Unscented candles are best for food tables

Pale seashells/snowflakes make for a nice all white combo

Clear bowls with lots of floating candles

Garden store six pack plants and sod can be your friend

I like to have desserts double as centerpieces at a tea. Also, flowers in teapots and cupcakes in teacups.

Grouping like items can be pretty and simple. For my work dinner I'm toying with the idea of a raised platter of grouped pears all standing up lit from within surrounded with many votive candles and bowls holding the chocolate for my tastings.

Also thinking about red/green apples

We recently did a beautiful event at work with single stem branches of white orchids (these were the inexpensive kind you see at trader joe's) in a collection of various height bud vases and votives grouped together. They were stunning and the all white look made it seem like snow.
