Need mango help - The mangoes here suck (the only reason I miss FL), and I'm wondering if I can use

jarred mangoes or reconstituted dried mangoes for salsa, sauces, etc. Can dried ones be reconstituted successfully or should I look for the jarred ones? (Can't find frozen around here so far).

Have not used either of those, but use frozen on a regular basis. When we get fresh here, they

are very spendy and I just like to gobble them up.

But several times a year I take joannie's Prawn, Mango and Avocado Salad to pot lucks using the frozen chunks. Also use them for salsa.

At work I get them in 40# boxes and often thaw them slightly and add to breakfast fruit.

enjoy,
Nan

Jarred ones are possible

I haven't used the dry ones but I can't imagine the flavor would be fresh like "real" mangoes in a salsa. I have used the jarred ones- they are very "wet" but if you press them between paper towels to get some of the jar juices out you should have good luck using them.

should have mentioned, they are in 1# bags at regular store, don't have to get 40#!

Did you read the story on a mango candy at Gourment.com?

The author writes about a Japanese candy, whose mango flavor is better than the real thing.

I tasted the candy, I wouldn't go so far as to say it's better than a real mango, but it's pretty close to the flavor of our Hawaii mangoes. It was definitely better than the tasteless mango I had in a nice hotel in Vancouver.

A bunch of us Hawaii folk were on a vacation, and had a breakfast buffet at the hotel. No one could figure out what one of the fruits were, so we had to ask the waitress. When she said it was a mango, we all laughed! We thought we were eating some exotic Canadian fruit!
