First it's good to see so many familiar faces. Thank you Mimi for setting this up. Here's my situation; my daughter has deployed to Bosnia; she's on a base with a small kitchen and would like to make some christmas cookies to try to get into the spirit of things. But: no food processor, cookies cutters, no gadgets of any kind. Minimal here; although she said she would try to improvise. I'm so danged busy with construction everyday and plus it would be cool to get some of you involved...so, andy ideas for simple holiday cookies that she could make? If you want to include a recipe that would be sweet indeed. And if you really want to get involved you could email it to her directly mishklet@hotmail.com Her name is Shelby, she'll be 21 in February and has been in the Navy for 3 years. She won't be able to tell you what she's doing as it's classified. She is also limited on some ingredients, but she can be resourceful. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps us! Welcome Heather! It's good to "see" you here too...

Does she have access to a hand mixer? How about some icebox cookies...

Here's what Shelby said quote unquote regarding kitchen stuff

"I've found a few decent sites for recipes, but do you have any recommendations? The cooking facilities here aren't that great, but I want
to at least try. Some of the guys are going places, but for those of us who are staying here, I want to do something a little home-like... Sorry to bother you, but you're the best I know to ask. Keep in mind, I don't even think we have a food processor here, or a pastry blender, or any specialized tools for that matter, but I think I can improvise if needed. We do have a fine assortment of random utensils, kitchen knives, and pans though."

I really appreciate anyone helping us out on this. It's going to be an especially hard Christmas for her, the first one she's ever been away from home and only the 2nd one since her brother died. She's quite a character and hopefully she'll take the time to write back to one and all who take the time to give her ideas!

pre-christmas hugs to all...and thank you for the welcome Ruth.

Sent her recipes for...

Thumbprint Cookies and Amish Ginger Cookies. I got a nice reply; apparently she's gotten tons of recipes from you guys! She'll never be able to bake them all. ;o)

Thanks Mimi!

She's been emailing me and sharing recipe info. She was planning on baking yours the night before, I haven't heard how they turned out. I say the more the merrier. She very seldom wanted to help out in the kitchen so I'm delighted that she's becoming interested now. And she said she's delighted with all of the emails she's received. This is her first time out of the country, and she's the only female in her area there. I'm very pleased that she's writing back to people; I think it's probably appreciated by both sides.

I emailed her too...

Just saw your post, I sent her one of my best and easiest recipes, and also directed her to Sylvia's Assorted Christmas Cookies thread on Epi where I'd posted about 10 more cookie recipes (there are roughly 200 on that thread). Gave her some ideas as to what cookies are easy to make with limited equipment, how to improvise on cookie cutters, and told her about my George Clooney 'assortment' (my friend adored them). I know you're swamped getting the business going, and a package wouldn't arrive until after Christmas, but I offered to send her some spices if she wants to expand her 'pantry' and continue baking after Christmas.

Sent Shelby some recipes and she replied...

that she was busily testing out some of the recipes that people had already sent to her. Girl takes after her mom!
