New Mexico food report

Hi all! I'm back. I really missed you all and checking in. I sure have a lot of posts to read.

We had a great trip to New Mexico--it was cool and cloudy for the most part and nobody got sunburned. I bathed the baby in 55 SPF and dressed him in long sleeves and pants. He's drooling a lot at the moment and his little chin got chapped, but he seems to have recovered. He behaved beautifully on the plane--not a peep out of him both ways. Whew!

My mother's memorial service went very well. It sprinkled before, but the real rain held off until we'd finished, then it poured buckets. The headstone looks very nice and we planted some Sweet William and Indian Paintbrushes around the base. I hope they take.

Our food roundup:

I ate a ton of green chile...we gave the baby a tiny taste of green chile and he smiled really big--it bodes well. smileys/smile.gif

My aunt made some wonderful posole and pinto beans, and a neighbor brought over two wonderful briskets (she cooks the brisket overnight and it's fabulous--it's my DH's favorite dish and he almost didn't let the rest of us have any). My dad bought a watermelon that was the sweetest I've ever had--so good.

Also, a neighbor had us over for homemade vanilla ice cream. It was almost like a custard--soooo good. And one night, my uncle grilled hamburgers. I could eat a cheeseburger every day and never get tired of them.

Restaurants visited:

La Placita in Albuquerque. I had chile rellenos with green chile, and sopaipillas with mesquite honey. Food was not as good as it's been in the past, but we got to sit next to the big tree which is always fun.

Tomasita's in Santa Fe. Beef burrito with green chile. GREAT sopaipillas. I've always avoided Tomasita's because of all the touristas, but the food was very good.

Tacos de los Idolas in Santa Fe. I had chicken chalupas (needed to lay off the green chile for a day!). This was a little taco hole-in-the-wall next to Lowe's waaaayyyy out on Cerillos Road. (Of course, DH HAD to visit a Lowe's while we were in town.) The food was just regular Mexican, but was really, really good. GREAT, spicy beans. Had my first lime Jarritos in over a year. I sure wish we had a good Mexican place where we live...

El Corral in Corona (this is the tiny, tiny town where my relatives live). Carne adovada burrito with green chile. The carne had a great flavor, and wasn't too hot.

La Choza in Santa Fe. Carne adovada burrito with red chile. Very, very good. This was my standby in college--great food for not much money (the prices seemed to have increased, though). Wonderful sopapillas. (Funny story: the manager tried to seat us at a table in the middle, but then offered us a table in the corner. I said we'd rather have the corner in case I had to nurse the baby and hopefully nobody would mind if I did that. He swished a hand at me and said, "Honey, if anyone objects, you tell me who they are!" Love it when you have the support of management!)

Teofilas in Las Lunas (my cousins took us there). Tamales with green chile. Bland beans. Watery spanish rice. The food wasn't bad, just not the best we had in NM.

I'm already going through chile withdrawal...

Mmmm, Tomasita's sopaipillas! So glad you had a good trip--v. cute about the baby + green chile!

Oh Amanda, reading your post brought me right back there.

and I'm so hungry for chile now! That reminds me I have a carne avodava packet in my pantry, I should fire that puppy up this week and see if it takes my tongue off, it's pretty spicy I think.

So glad you had a good trip and a good visit with family, although I wish it was a for a happier occasion.

Hugs - Heather

Sounds like it was a bittersweet trip.

So glad you had this time with your family.

The food sounds wonderful. I cannot drive through NM with a couple of stops for green chile dishes. And the baby is getting a diversified palette early in life, very good.

I probably shouldn't tell, but my son's first taste was refried beans. (The doctor said "any time after five months, when he's interested in food, feed him. No eggs or peanutbutter, tho.") His first interest was while I was eating Mexican food. I guess it should be no surprise that he's working at a taco place while going to school, LOL.

A can of green chiles and pinto beans are sitting on the counter for dinner tonight. Endless blue

--deep, deep blue--skies will have be viewed in memory mode only.
