so that you don't have to learn it the hard way.

BTW, I posted this on my FB page, so it might be old news to some

here we go

Yesterday in the middle of one of the busiest cooking days ever, I decided to do a quick run to the recycling center. Buck is my buddy, the only one who likes to ride in the car with me, so I invited him along.

Got there early, no one around, I said to myself, Great job, Sally, you can park right by the glass container spot, in and out in 30 seconds. So I got off the car and left key, engine running, and my bag inside. Vapt, vupt, back..... The doors are locked! Buck must have jumped at the door when I left and locked them. If you lock one from inside, both get locked, of course....

The drama unfolded as I entered their office in panic, begging to use their phone to call for help... This HUGE guy sweet as a teddy bear said "maybe I'll be able to help you...." - and he comes out with a bunch of gadgets worthy of a burglar... a little inflatable black plastic bag that he pushed through the door and pumped just enough to get a little opening, then a big wire - he manipulated it like a pro to hit the control to bring the window down. Of course, Buck is going NUTS inside, in complete disapproval of that humongous human being next to his Mom and messing with the pickup truck....

My life doesn't have that many dull moments, I tell ya! It was a wild, wild ride.... So, my advice for you: never ever EVER leave your car running with a dog inside

Thank you Sally for the wise words. you brought back memories for me when I first learned the same

lesson, only with a toddler in the car, on a very hot summer day. I was in total panic, but remembered that we had one of those skeleton keys made for our wallets that only open the car door manually. Thank goodness for that funny little key. Not sure they have those anymore with the new smart cars.

I saw this happen in a parking lot one time--with a baby in a car seat on a HOT day--

the fire truck was there--and a fireman with a sledge hammer ready to go through the window!! Cooler heads prevailed and they got it open some other way. The dad was going nuts.

I once saw a dog launch a 1966 Cadillac into the lake

The owners backed the boat up to the lake (attached to the Caddy) and left their dog inside. Dog somehow hit the lever into reverse and...bingo...launched Caddy

That should read .. never ever leave a car running...... (A friend watched hers driven away as she

popped plastic into the recyle bin.

Okay, I'm going to post this, even though the memory is quite disturbing.

A couple of summers ago I went to my local supermarket. As I drove my HUGE 4-wheel-drive Ford F-350 Diesel pickup with dual rear wheels into the parking lot, I drove past a small sedan. I noticed a toddler was strapped into his safety seat in the middle of the back seat. Once I had driven past the car, it dawned on me that I didn't see anyone else in the car.

I circled back and looked again. No one around. There was a crew-cab pickup truck with dark tinted windows parked one space away, but I didn't see anyone through the front windshield. I drove between the two vehicles and put my window down. The car with the toddler was running, windows up, and the little guy seemed okay.

Again, my truck is BIG and LOUD.

I looked at the black truck and saw no one. I yelled "Hey! Anyone in there??" Nothing.

So, since it was 107 degrees outside, I called 911 and reported a baby locked in a car with no one else around.

The cop cruisers were there in less than 2 minutes.

They immediately assessed the situation and started banging on the door of the pickup truck. Next thing I see is the cops pulling two half-naked people out of the back seat of the crew cab. The cops were going BALLISTIC. I thought they were going to pummel the guy. There was a female cop in the face of what turned out to be the mother of the toddler in the car. She was giving her a dressing-down for the ages.

They got the baby out of the car, and since the AC was running, he was fine, thank God.

It was so sad.

After all I had done to get their attention, they couldn't be bothered to deal with it.

The guy was a "boyfriend", and the mother was arrested for child endangerment. I knew one of the officers who had responded, and he said temporary custody was awarded to the sister of the child's mother.

Makes me sick.

Michael
