Looking to go on a Alaska cruise, around july 2 or 5 Norwegin Pearl or Star. If anyone has done this which is better, going to Glacier Bay or Sawyer Glacier. And is it best to be on the 8th 9th or 10th deck. Any help please.

Thank you

We did Glacier Bay on

our cruise a few years back. It was a totally awesome experience hearing and seeing glaciers calving. At the time, we had heard we could get closer in to Glacier than Sawyer (Princess cruise line) so we chose Glacier. Recently I was reading a comparison on a cruise forum. Let me see if I can find it.

We've gone twice - in 2002 and 2007 ...

2002 was on Holland American to Glacier Bay (leaving out of Vancouver)-- we went in July - which is about the warmest it will be. Glacier Bay was AWESOME. Everyone on deck was whispering -- perhaps because the awesomeness of it all. You could hear the ice cracking. There was a piece of ice that cropped out of the glacier over the water -- I mentioned how cool it would be if it would break off while we were there --- and low-and-behold - 5 minutes later it did!!! It was like slow motion seeing it fall. And then when it hit the water - the ripple came towards the ship -- and then then ship rocked!!!! That was some piece of ice!!!
Vancouver is awesome -- the gardens in Victoria are gorgeous.

In 2007 we went in May on Norwegian Star to Sawyer leaving from Seattle -- unfortunately there were too many ice-bergh-lets (don't know how to spell it) and the captain decided not to go up around the corner and into the glacier area. On this ship we were on the 11th deck -- we had a penthouse, my parents had the mini-suite next to it. It was lovely having a butler (sigh...). My parents enjoyed looking at the scenery from their balcony -- they could go in and warm up when they wanted. We always stayed on deck to see the glaciers.

Personally I like upper decks. Less rocking (if your affected by that) better view (in my opinion). The penthouse was not my usual cabin -- we splurged since it had a second bedroom and second full bath and my single brother had that space in the penthouse for himself and we all enjoyed the dining room, living room and bigger balcony. But again - probably a once in a life time thing (unless I get to go on the QM2 again -- and then I'm going for it!!)

Alaska is awesome ---- enjoy!!!

Fun! I could be your shore excursion if you have to depart out of Anchorage for your trip home!

Seriously, let me know your destination and maybe we could hook up, or I could get you to the airport. If you stop in Ketchikan, Nan might be in town.

I agree, other than Alaska, have only done Caribbean, but Alaskan and Panama Canal were favorites.

Thank you everyone Cruise is booked

We are going to do Glacier Bay, Leaving July 6th can't wait. Nice thing is we leave from Seattle which is only a hr away. Bad thing is the cruise ships pass by our home 4 times a week. So have to watch until then. Sorry AngAk we stop in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Victoria then home to Seattle.

We went about the same time of year...

and were the first cruise ship to get into the Reid Glacier (Glacier Bay) that year. It was the most awesome experience!! Juneau was every bit as fabulous...we took a wildlife viewing boat outing in Juneau, had time at Mendenhall Glacier there and then a cruise of the bay where we watched orcas up close, breeding. Phenomenal! By the way, Annabelle's saloon in Ketchikan made a great crab sandwich back in the day. *Ü*

Am heading home tomorrow, Have fun carol, I will be gone to work then, will pm you with some ideas--
