For anyone who loves books.
I've read the book, but the audio version is so good that I have to recommend it. You can listen to a sample at the link.
Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement. (from Amazon)
Be warned: This is a SAD story, narrated by Death, with sections that I wept over. But it ends with Hope, so if you can deal with: Nazi Germany, persecution of Jews, young children losing their parents...wow, I almost just convinced myself not to recommend this...
However, Death is so...erudite. I loved how Zusak wrote words that showed "life" from a totally different perspective. The very beginning of the book is a bit confusing, because Death is telling several events that happen in the future. But after that, the story is linear.
And the kindness demonstrated by the people in Liesel's small world will break your heart.
The movie is opening Nov 13; casting looks superb.
