NFR: barcodes and ISBN numbers

I know some of you have published books...I am trying to figure out how these ISBNs work. It seems you have to buy "blocks" of them?? At around $100 each? And if you get reprints you have to buy the codes all over again?

Does the ISBN include the barcodes??

I guess I need publishing for dummies...

You can buy a single ISBN, but it's costly. Blocks of 10 run $250 for U.S. individuals/companies; they can be purchased from Bowker's "My Identifiers" site: clickety.

Not sure about the reprints question, off the top of my head...

You do not (typically) need to buy the barcode--if you're self-publishing, someplace like LightningSource will do the barcode for you.

But the point of buying your own ISBNs is that you control the info and metadata--that is, you/your company is registered as the publisher, etc. (With someplace like CreateSpace or Lulu, they own the ISBN and the book will always have their metadata attached to it, which marks it immediately as a self-pubbed book--not a problem for everyone, but not everyone knows this.)

Feel free to email me if you want more info--I bought a block of 10 and used the first to do my friend's book (from ISBN purchase to metadata wrangling to editing to typsetting). smileys/smile.gif

One caveat: if you use LightningSource, you really need to know what you're doing; I think CreateSpace and Lulu are more user-friendly for people who've never published/self-published before. LightningSource produces extremely professional results, but they do not offer any real support in building the book (since they're primarily a printer)--I knew this, so I knew I needed to get InDesign and hire a cover designer.

p.s. The three "Bibles" of self-publishing and print-on-demand are:

One

Two

(This last one is not as good as the first one by Shepard, but it does have a few tips that are not in his first one. Anyway, he's good about updating his stuff online, so it's not really necessary.)
Three

Clearly, I could wax on about this for hours, but I'll stop. smileys/wink.gif Let me know if I can help with anything.

So you bought the block of 10 with the idea of publishing 10 books?

I am doing one for my friend, which is how I've gotten into it. We are about 30 minutes away from final editing and ready to go to the next step with the ISBN. Yes, we are using CreateSpace so I don't have to worry about the barcode?
Thanks so much for the info - I had checked out Bowkers and am now looking at isbnagency.com

Erin, I've always thought BookLocker was the best POD publisher. They always...

...seem to get good reviews, and I like how Angela Hoy does business.

Have you heard of them?

Michael

I've only vaguely heard of them, Michael, but

that's probably because I already had experience with LightningSource and didn't need any of the POD publishers' author services (such as BookLocker and Lulu offer), since I was acting as publisher. Most of the firms that advertise POD use LightningSource as their printer and distributor anyway--I just cut out the middleman. smileys/wink.gif

Yes, I did. Not sure what CS's policies are on the barcode, and I wouldn't want to misinform you...

Check any paperwork you have from them, I'd say...?
