NFR CHAT: If a tree falls in the woods and you're 500 miles away, does it still hit your house?

...and the Zen answer is: Hell Yes.

Bad wind storm in NC sent a 40 foot locust tree down on my little house in the woods. Locust trees have notoriously shallow roots and my contractor had removed the majority from the house perimeter. But just like the little pig's wooden house, my wolf was a 50+ mph wind and it found a willing object.

Fortunately, I have a kind and helpful neighbor who saw the tree laying on the roof, contacted me with photos and took care of repairs. I drove up from FL since I didn't know if there was internal damages and am posting from Starbucks.

Wishing everyone a safe New Year as I'm not sure when I'll get back on. WiFi is very iffy.

Oh, my goodness, MarilynFL. That sounds like Murphy's Law in spades. I hope yr house

isn't in too bad of shape. How nice that you have such a helpful neighbor. May 2017 go lots better for you than the way 2016 is winding up!

Marilyn, I'm so sorry to hear this, indeed, what a nice neighbor! You still have

a great sense of humor. Give yourself a hug for me!!!!

I can so sympathize. When I bought my house the back yard had three American Elms

I didn't know that there were any that Dutch Elm Disease didn't get in the Seventies. One was truly massive and very close to the back side of the house. One of the smaller ones died years ago. The massive one lost a big section some time ago in a storm and pulled all my utilities down, including tearing the electric meter off the house & costing a bunch to have the electric brought up to post-1950s code. I had the rest of it taken down two years ago because I was terrified every time it stormed due to their weak V-branching structure. When I say "huge"- it cost $3000 to have it taken down. The last one is being cut down on 01/20. I am praying we don't have a big ice or snow storm between now & then. Sure is sad during the summer when it is 105 to have NO shade with a South & West exposure though. They were beautiful & graceful trees.

I so sympathize! Christmas day my roof (two years old) leaked andhalf of the living room ceiling

caved in. The contractor we hired 2 years ago took advantage of Mike being so ill and me not wanting to climb the roof to check the work. He dissolved the business this summer. Despicable

Lucky for unlucky - fast action!

Mar, so sorry to hear your news smileys/frown.gif but grateful for the quick action of your neighbor. For a potentially catastrophic situation, J and I are hoping you dodged a major bullet with only minimal damage (and an opportunity to "get away for the holidays" smileys/wink.gif Looking back on our flood, the fast resolution is what I remember most.
