Buying a vacuum cleaner is such a personal purchase. What is your lifestyle?
Do you have pets which shed, kids who make messes, hard surfaces or carpet, tile or wood? Do you want attachments within easy reach. Light weight or heavier for harder jobs. Are your carpets shag or low pile? So many things come into play. Once you figure out exactly what you want the vacuum to do, go from there.
I recently bought a Bissel because it was light weight, and does not use bags, and was advertized as very powerful. I bought it and really like it. What I did not know was that it does not work with shag carpets. So now I have two vacuums, which I really did not need.
I should have done a bit more homework. I did check Amazon for the different types which was a mistake. I should have done what I have always done in years past and drive about ten minutes from here to a locally owned and operated store which sells vacuums cleaners and has been in business for over 50 years. They have all sorts of floor models you can play with, and the salesperson asks about your lifestyle and what you expect from the vacuum.
You need to make sure you get a type which will lay flat so you can get under furniture and beds. If you and your wife are elderly, you need to take into consideration how hard the vacuum is to push. Some can be very hard on elderly knees. Lots to think about for a successful purchase that needs to be made with your way of living and needs in mind.
