NFR--Have you all seen this? My chuckle for the day! Would not have surprised had this been Marilyn.

okay...this is a little freaky. Last Friday I was sitting at my kitchen counter

having a cup of coffee and reading mail when I saw something in my kitchen window through peripheral vision.

(see link)

I grabbed my phone and started a video because this cub was only about 15 feet from me. That's my retaining wall and parking spot behind the house. The video is basically me going "ohmygodohmygodohmygod" with a few shots of the cub and images of my feet running out to the porch, at which point, he/she turned around, saw me and took off while I turned around and ran back into the house.

Oh geez...you got Mama bear there. And you live in such an classy neighborhood!

I'm out in the boonies, about 5 miles from the Smoky Mountains. So...bears and elks sort of come with the territory.

Quite. Literally.

Yours was probably looking for the nearest Starbucks.

We were hiking Grinnell Glacier when two younger people ran past us

back up the hill. Over their shoulders they yelled, "Bears!" and kept running. Dh and I had hiking sticks, bear bells, bear spray (primed and ready smileys/wink.gif and believed we could tell the difference between a black and grizzly bear. Then we looked at each other and knew that we would not be able to outrun the younger folks - we would certainly be attacked if angry grizzly bears appeared around the bend. Fortunately, the pack of 3 were black bears. When they saw Dh and I all puffed up, waving our walking poles and shaking our bells, they decided to move off the path away from us and down the hill. Not cute at all! Colleen

We're one street away from the greenbelt. A friend whose house backed onto

the forest used to leave her garage door open all the time. The morning of her daughter's birthday party, she went into the garage and found the freezer door wide open. The ice cream for the party had been taken onto the front lawn and eaten, great bites taken out of the tubs, and there were ice cream footprints all the way up the drive. After that she kept the garage door closed.

We see quite a few bears here. DH sometimes sees them on his walks, but I have only done that once, and thank goodness it was as scared of me as I was of it.

How cool to see elk, we just see white-tailed deer.

Good play on words, Michael! I sort of expected Marilyn to have seen a bear or 2 in NC, but Lana in

Florida(!)--what a surprise with you. Alligators, yes, but you have spotted BIG BEARS, no less. Think I'll stick with southern Indiana and keep trapping chipmunks in our backyard so they don't ruin as many of my edible flowers which I use for baking and for garnishing. That's about as close to and as big of any type wildlife as I want to contend with. Smile.
