NFR, or maybe: does viewing something or maybe the smell of something transport you immediately to

some lovely place in your past? Just this morning I was making a quick handbasket trip to the grocery store(Fred Meyer) before work, and I passed by the stationery aisle where they had displayed a huge assortment of Crayola products on the end cap. Just seeing all those lovely new boxes of crayons took me immediately back to my family room as a child and sitting on the floor by the coffee table with crayons and coloring books. Such a vivid, pleasant and ultra calming memory. I was startled by the depth of those feelings. I so loved to color. And new crayons. yeah baby. and a Big Box with sharpener---whoa Nelly!

I haven't done it in a while, but as recently as a few years ago I bought myself

a small box of crayons when they put the school supplies out in the fall. I often don't USE them, but just buying & having them makes me happy. Truly a cheap thrill. They are so symbolic of happiness & new beginnings.

do kids still color in this electronic age? I sure hope so. it's one of my best memories

Yes, kids certainly do - at least here. I have tons of crayons, come on over! smileys/bigsmile.gif

It is one of my daughter's favorite activities. She and her friends draw picture notes for each other on a daily basis - it is really cute to read the thoughts they put to paper about and to each other.

Crayola has a special promotion with limited time only colors packaged by theme - you can buy various combinations and can also get a special tin to hold them.

I couldn't resist picking up a pack of "Cupcake My Day" for myself when on the most recent crayon-buying trip at Target:

Not a lovely place...more of a frightening memory. Our grade school

cafeteria was in the basement and at lunchtime we would line up along the wall to pass through the line single file.

In 1959, my elementary school prepared us for the "atomic bomb" blast that the Evil Empire would one day drop on our little town in western PA. That meant an emergency drill where we all filed out of our classrooms, walked down to the basement and silently lined up along the wall, awaiting either the "all clear" or the sound of approaching planes preparing to drop the Big One on us.

Of course, the cafeteria staff were busy preparing our lunches and so the odor of institutional gravy combined with utter visceral terror is a memory I can't quite get rid of.

The only problem with lining up in school that I remember was it was frequently alphabetical

and my maiden name was White. I was always at the end of the line. High School graduation there were just a handful after me.

can we have our very own boxes? I have a hard time sharing the new crayons smileys/smile.gif

My last name is "B"-I was always near the nun's desk-hard to get away with things but not impossible

We weren't bad evil kids - just mischievous. Ringing the lunch bell or dismissal bell 5 minutes early. Hiding the playground hand bell that signaled time to come in from lunch.... that sort of stuff.....

"Ahh, I love the smell of a fresh box of crayons in the morning" - my husband's 4yr old godchild

said one day. He's 7 now and still loves the smell of a new box of crayons. He lines up the boxes (yes he has several) on his desk along with the other art supplies.

Oh - and it took him 20 minutes to color Lincoln's hair because he was doing the various shades of

browns to give it depth..... Again - he's 7.....

Magenta is still my favorite. When I was young(er), I used to take it out of

my box of crayons and hide it so none of my friends could use it while we were coloring - I wanted it to last as long as possible.
