NFR question: do you use your oven cleaner ?

I'm not speaking of an external product rather the option programmed on your oven. I have heard from repair people that there are limited number of times they can be used. I had an old oven that when I used the oven cleaner it died. Maybe it would have anyway? I now have a new oven and I'm afraid to use the oven cleaner. So I'm wondering what others' have heard or experienced.

Happy Belated thanksgiving to our American friends. I hope your efforts in the kitchen were rewarded.

yes, I use my oven cleaner and have for over 45 years with new kitchen when we bought the house

and a remodel at the 20 year age, My Dacor double oven is cleaning beautifully. I did have to replace the heat receptacle on the bottom of the oven two years ago, but it is all working great. I use the clean cycle about three times a year..

Thank you Karen. I bought a Dacor as well.

Great to hear that you're still happy with it. May I ask do you ever find that the timer jumps on you? Seems odd, but that happens to me. I bought the oven/microwave just before the pandemic so I haven't looked yet into having the problem resolved.
Thanks for you input.

My ovens were 35 years old when I left them and I had cleaned them regularly. However, this was

the age before digital and the clock was one of those roll over and click the numbers, you know, the numbers roll. Eventually, they stopped rolling because of the oily fumes from the upper oven. Then I had to do the oven cleaning using the manual timer....me.

My next oven, a single guy, sadly, opened nowhere near the clock, which was digital anyway.

And now, again sadly, I am reduced to a clean with chemicals kind of oven.

So just a little heads-up, that one might want to be aware of where the fumes go and what they might affect.

I quit using my automatic oven cleaning function several yrs ago when a neighbor called me in a

panic because she had cleaned her oven (using its built-in cleaning cycle) prior to hosting her family for the holidays, and the whole oven died. The repairman told her his phone rings the most at Thanksgiving and/or Christmas times due to people doing exactly that because the temperatures for oven cleaning are so high. Then he sometimes cannot get the parts and do the necessary repair work prior to when people need to bake or roast on THE DAYS all their company is on site.

I finished helping my friend roast her turkey and bake other items and decided right then that I would switch back to manual labor for my stove cleaning operation rather than take such a risk. So I now clean my oven using EASY-OFF whenever there are small messes, and it doesn't take me long.

I have rarely used the timer on my oven. It is rather quiet, and I prefer to use

the timer that I hang around my neck. I bounce around a lot and need timers to let me know to get back to my cookies, or whatever. I do use the timer on my microwave, as it is loud. I also have a Dacor 6 burner cooktop and love it. Never a single issue in over 20 years. What I am not happy with is the integrity of many service folks. My oven quit working and when I called for service, they told me my oven was old and I needed to replace it. Since I have double ovens, that was going to be a big expense. Our son came up from Sacramento to visit and he uses YouTube for all his home repairs. He somehow checked my oven and found out the top oven heating element was burned out. He ordered a part, came up to install it for us, and it has been working fine ever since.

When we remodeled, the oven is vented to come out the bottom near the floor, I have no idea if there

is a vent through the roof. I always thought that strange, but it does not bother us, there is no damage to my hardwood floor. When I turn my oven on, it defaults to 350° and from there I manually click on the temp I want. That part works fine.

And since we're on this...years ago a friend had her oven on clean and her little girl approached

the windows and stuck her hands right on it. I don't recall if the windows had a pull-up barrier but I don't even want to describe what happened to the poor little tyke's hands.

Funny you mention this. We are discussing on another board I’m on..,

So many had ovens dying even the ones with new ovens use an oven cleaner vs built in.
