NFR: Where do you get inspiration for table decorations?

I love to entertain but I am totally clueless when it comes to setting the table. My center pieces are usually a boquet of flowers and I'm not very good at decorating around a theme. Where do you all get your ideas and inspiration?

EvaN - I use books, magazines and searches on the net for "tablescapes," wonderful resource.

I look through magazines for inspiration. An arrangement of veggies also makes a nice centrepiece.

Mix herbs and flowers for a stunning and fragrant arrangement. For something a little different I've also used a leaf shaped fougasse with herbs arranged in the holes. Don't forget candles. And, there are many websites which show how to fold napkins in unique ways.

The important thing is to keep your table decorations simple and have fun.

As I kill anything living (not guests, I hope) I tend to design the table around things

from our home rather than fresh flowers. For example, a large oriental vase with Death-free silk blossoms surrounded by smaller asian pots; dragons (large and small), pigs (large and small), seashells sets in various bowls and plates, cobalt blue items. One particular favorite was a mass of small windup toys....it kept the conversation moving.

One book that I've enjoyed (with fun centerpieces I can actually accomplish myself) is Katie Brown's. I like that girl's imagination (see link). It's fun and not serious.

On the other hand, this book ("A Passion for Parties" by Caroline Roehm) has lovely ideas that are, unfortunately, so far out of my price range that they are useless to me. I simply can't remember the last time I constructed a dance floor in a barn, lined walls with bolts of silk, or hung hundreds of imported chinese lanterns.

Personally, I think anyone who has the money to throw that kind of party has the kind of money to hire someone else who'll have read the book.
