My almost 17 year old Maytag is giving up the ghost. On the advice of the repairman from the last visit, we have issued a Do Not Resusitate and are seeking a replacement. I've been reading on the internet about all the horror stories of the new Maytag/Amana fridges. What have you gotten that you've been happy with?

I have narrowed my list to the GE and the LG, but would happily look at other options. I'm interested in a large (3 teenage boys), SS, freezer on the bottom, probably french door without water/ice on the outside. Of course, lower prices are always nice.

We got a Frigedaire after reading Consumer Reports...now it's 21 years old!! And it won't die!....

It's gotten to the point where I'd really like an updated refrige and this one just keeps chugging along. With nary a repair or problem.

Ours is 30 now and doubtless a real power consumer. So we asked our

repairman. Here's the standard reply that they all seem to give.

If you have an old appliance, you won't be able to buy one as good. He keeps wanting us to save the old Maytag laundry machines as well. Also 30. He keeps saying that they just don't make appliances like this any longer.

He said he has been called out to repair Sub-Zeros that won't even start from the get-go and they in general are no better than any other. He also said one to stay away from is Frigidaire, that everything they make is now not worth it. sorry Pinky, but you do have one of the older guys.

He also said that in the process of Whirlpool's taking over Kitchenaid, they did keep the high quality of the dishwasher. What an icon that is.

Don't have any more than that unfortunately, since I haven't replaced mine yet. Good luck.

So now that Whirlpool has taken over Jennair as well, there really isn't a lot of choice left is there?

I did see a report that stated that any frig over 25 years of age is consuming waaaaaaaaaaay too much power.

If I were to get one, your choice of style is the one I want. It just has to fit under my cabinets. That's the stickler.

My brother (appliance repair) just stopped by. He recommends

either Whirlpool or KitchenAid. Said that LG is made in North Korea(but I think maybe South Korea). He doesn't recommend either GE or LG.

My DD has the huge Viking Pro fridge

and hates it! It's a very poorly designed unit for the money it costs, in my opinion. I did a search on the web last year and found a huge forum all about the woes of the Viking refrigerators.

You'd think Viking would wake up and make some changes.

I love the freezer on the bottom fridges and hope buy that next time around. (maybe next year)

I have the LG with freezer on the bottom

As a kid, we always had our freezer on the bottom, We are a short family!!! It is well designed, very roomy, well made- No problems- Got it through Home depot and price was great! As for being from South Korea, I remember when our old transistor radios that said "made in Japan" were thought to be junk! Just
WHERE are all the electronics from now???!!!!!
