NFRC-Any of you have dachschunds? Here's a scare my sister couldn't foresee

Woke up last night to one of her dogs crying. Realized that her elderly rescue dachschund (very small but kind of chubby) had crawled into the sleeve of her robe that was on the bed and gotten stuck. She thinks she would have suffocated if she hadn't gotten her out. She held up the top of the sleeve and shook her out. Took about five minutes. She said the dog was in a panic and she was worried about what the shaking was doing to her back but she had to get her out. She's fine now.

The noble Dachshund

I have two wire-haired standard Dachshunds. They love to snuggle into warm spaces and be under blankets. There are so many dangers to our pets. A dachshund died a couple years back while its owner was at work when the dog found a peperidge farm cookie bag in the trash. He worked his head in to get the crumbs and couldn't get the bag off his head, panicked and suffocated. I am very careful to constantly scan for things that might possibly hurt them and we just can't get everything. Did you know children's stuffed toys are treated with flame retardent chemicals that will kill a dog by dissolving it's intestines if ingested? How many times have I seen well intentioned and very loving dow owners giving their dogs children's stuffed toys and not ones made for dogs. Thanks for the alert. Just one more thing to be on the watch for.

Guess that robe sleeve was just like a burrow to crawl down

My Belgian Sheepdog so loves soft babies but he tears them up so fast I can't let him have them. Never buy people toys for him though.

My sister has two, her boyfriend's two are always there, plus she has

a lab mix, corgi and doves. Sometimes squirrels she has rescued. Possums and raccoons hanging around. She is Dr. Doolittle. I couldn't stand the barking with the dachschunds.

Afraid not, it's the stuffing that has been saturated with the flame retardant.

Buy your baby a new stuffed toy at the pet store and let the other one "dissappear".

Richard, thanks for the info. I was not aware of that. Really important guidance. Much appreciated

Although I don't think Teddy Bear will be happy!

Best,
Barb

Dachshunds

My daughter has one who I watch 2 days a week along with my 5 year old grandson. I've noticed that he's always burrowing- under pillows, blankets, whatever. I don't know if its a Dachshund trait, but his barking drives me crazy and he hates people he doesn't know - will even bite. Other than that he's very affectionate and very needy. I would never have one.

I had a mini and he didn't bark or burrow much -- loved everyone but my husband smileys/smile.gif
