NFRC Does anyone have any experience, either you or someone you know, with those robot floor vacs

roomba

There was a thread about the roomba vac at Fine Cooking not too long ago. From what I read they work well. Everyone that used them had good things to say about it.

Don't waste your money...I bought a Roomba, and it is a piece of junk. I have mostly ceramic tile..

floors, but it can't handle different floors like area rugs and carpets, especially if the rugs have fringe, and you spend as much time cleaning the machine after you use it as you would vacuuming. You also have to pick up and move stuff that would get in the way of it vacuuming the whole room, i.e.tables and chairs, wastebaskets, etc.

I also made the mistake of buying the floor washer, the Scooba. It is a joke! I used it once. The floor was not clean, the floor was still wet, and it can't do nooks and crannies and edges, which is the same problem with the Roomba. And you have to move stuff out of the way for it to do its job. Don't waste your money on either one.

I had one of the earlier models, it sucked, BUT...my mom has a new one and it's awesome...

Mom upgraded to the latest model, both the vacuum and the floor washer, and they actually worked! I saw all the stuff they picked up and they didn't get "stuck" like my early model was always doing. They both just did their job just fine. However, they are no replacement for a real vacuum and good ol' elbow grease, either.

Fringes on carpets

it's true, they don't handle fringes on carpets very well, but my mom pointed out that in the instructions (which I hadn't read) they say to turn the fringe under before you use it.

My mom's newer model handled the area rug just fine, no problem. It didn't get it as clean as a real vacuum would, but it's fine for a mid-week touch-up.

I love mine, my folks love theirs - check out this sale

One year and going strong! We have hardwood floors throughout - only my stairs and upstairs hallway are carpeted. I don't use Roomba in the living room or family room where we have carpets with fringes - I am also very careful when "I" use the upright on my carpets. But she does fine on the larger sized short pile door and bath rugs. I pick up all of the others and shake outside.

Roomba and I team clean. She vacuums, I dust. She vacuums, I move furniture around in the next room. She vacuums, I clean the bathroom. She vacuums, I do the stairs. We cut our time in half and quick clean more often.

I bought mine on sale for $199 in 12/06 at Kohl's. Linens 'n Things has them for $160 with in store pick-up and a $25 rebate.

At the end of our cleaning, after I vacuum the stairs, I vacuum out Roomba's parts and plug her in for the next time! Colleen

My folks have mostly carpeting

I love seeing the crazy line patterns the Roomba makes in their plush living room carpet! I do know that they use a stick vac on their ceramic tile in the kitchen. The old Kirby is just too heavy for either of them to push anymore. Colleen

We have ceramic tile. My husb thought would save time 4 me picking up cat hair, yard debris in btwn.

regular cleanings. . I like the sound of your partnership with it.

It does seem like one either loves it or hates it.

I just got one and love, love, LOVE it! (updated ver out now...)

The lastest version *finally* can understand not getting tangled in cords or rug tassles. I'd been waiting till they fixed that because I knew I'd never get down and move all that. Note, I have hardwood floors so I can't speak about wall to wall carpet, but I know lots of folks who love it as much as I do. I got the middle of the road model I think it's the 535.

Also, someone at work has a Scooba for their tile floors and love it too - and it's in their ranch in TX with lots of dirt being tracked in so gets a workout. Go read what folks are saying over at Roomba Chat (see link) shopping advice there too.

Note this sale is on the older model...

...in this case I might be one to say you get what you pay for. I'd suggest reading up on models before buying.
