NFRC -How do you contend with this heat whe you have to go outside?

I think we're all going to pass out at my retirement party. My friends had set the time for 4:00 months ago, even though I (the honoree) had pointed out that it will be HOT in that backyard. I can wear a sunhat and an airy blouse but it's still going to be 94 and humid. Do those cloth thingies that you can chill and put around your neck work? So much for make-up and trying to make my hair look decent.

Are portable misters a viable option? Those were the only things

that made our evening stay in Tempe, AZ bearable. All of the restaurants had misters around their outside seating area and even though it was over 100 degrees, we were fine.

Warning: it may be expensive.

Dry ice will freeze popsticks nicely. Added to drinks as stirrers, it would help cool things

down...assuming you're okay with colored sugar water.

Only issue: Someone must man the dry ice and wear gloves to keep others from touching it.

They aren't too expensive, but don't know if it helps in humid areas

I bought one several years back that would rim the patio/hook to the hose for around $35, but it's not humid here. (I also have a portable one I took to football games.)

BTW, I have used those neck things and it helped a lot. My friend's husband who umpires LL games won't leave the house without one.

I use gel-filled bandanna thingies around my neck.

They work but only for about an hour and my shirt gets wet. If you can rent a large canopy and fans you may be able to keep your guests comfortable.

Good luck at the party and congratulations on your retirement.

If you are retirement age, and it is hot and humid, there is not much you can do to be comfortable

have the party indoors, and if you can't rent a room or a hall somewhere that has a/c. Life is too short to be miserable in the heat. We live where the summers are very hot, and I have reached an age where I refuse to go to outdoor parties in the summer, kids ball games, etc. It makes me feel almost sick and I am miserable. We had a 50th wedding anniversary the end of June. Our catered party started at 10:00 am around the pool. I had the patio fans and misters going. The only people who stayed outside for any length of time were the kids in the pool and the ones in their twenties.
I had plenty of help in my very cool kitchen, when it came time to put the food away. I spent my time coming in the house to cool off, then going back outside for about 15 minutes. Ugh.

Going to look for some gel-neck wraps, thanks!

Pop sticks sound good too, and I'm sure the teacher-bartender who is making margaritas will be very busy! Think we'll skip adding misters as the humidity has been so high. We're bringing our pop-up shade cover.

Also western Mass and southern NH.

I'm not ready for cold weather. I do like the warm days and cooler nights though.

The trick is to stay behind the misters, not under them.

Of course, then a breeze comes up and ZAP, there you are. I have curly hair too, but I don't care. Hair products takes care of that. Also, if you take hypertension meds, many tell you to stay out of the heat for lengthy times.
