My parents are taking a cruise to Alaska next May. Dad loves to read and I thought that a great christmas present would be a book about the history of Alaska. He loves to read historical books - the lives of presidents, war battles, etc. I'm not looking for a travel guide as they'll be on a cruise making designated stops and having designated tours.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Tess

Tess, Look into James A. Michener's "Alaska," I think you dad will ..>

love it. My husband is an Historical Novel fan and in my humble opinion no one writes them better that Michener did.

Check Amazon.com and read the comments of the readers.

book by John McPhee

John McPhee's book, Coming into the Country, is my favorite book about Alaska--plus, he's one of my favorite writers generally. It isn't a travel book, more of a wonderfully written immersion into Alaska's people and the land. Written in the '70s, I think, but would still be relevant.

Thank you for mentioning that, I used to live in Central, missed him when he was there. Great author!

Couldn't remember title, that's the one about Englishmen crossing Canada? From

what I remember somewhere, Michener wrote that as part of "Alaska" and publishers thought it was already long enough! Ya think?

Another fun, easy read and based on some fact is "Sitka" by Louis L'Amour

There's a great book about the North Slope and the pipeline called Forty Below, I think.

Must check on it at home tonight.

not so much historical, but Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez is a truly great read - good if they want

to get inspired by the biology and diversity and beauty of the arctic. it's an account of his many trips through the north.
