it happened at a beach we could see from our house. (When we lived there)

He was called out, as he is a Sea Rescue paramedic, to help with 2 beached whales, and at his cost too. He has a broken foot now.

When he got there the other whales kept coming ashore and coming ashore.

They apparently only managed to get 10 back and swiming off. There were 55 apparently beached.

They had to put down 45 and it has been about the most heart-breaking thing he has ever down.

He had taken his two sprogs of 9 and 6 and although this could/was the most awful thing for the young to witness, they actually have grown up a lot re this whole incident, and absolutely understand the whys and wherefores of putting them down.

This has not happened along that coast line ever before...(not in our life time)

I just saw that on the news over here. Your nephew did a great job. These whales

are heavy and difficult to move. Besides, many are wounded from being stranded ashore so they might not have made it anyways if they managed to get them out. It must have been heart breaking putting them down though. An animal is an animal, kwim?

Heartbreaking to lose so many. A few years ago about 125 whales got stranded here

in shallow waters in Hanalei Bay- whales never come in the bay. They were terribly confused, could not find their way out. The Hawaiians pulled from ancient knowledge and were able to gently escort them out to sea again. It was amazing. A documentary was made about it locally.

Turns out the whales got confused by Navy sonar. Lucky only one young whale died.

Wonder why the ones in So Africa beached.

One wonders why. The sea here is freezing and there is no bay....

the surf is dangerous. Everyone that participated or supported in those conditions is a hero in my book.
So very sad.
