NFRC: Last week a neighbor had a small fire in her laundry room that started in her clothes dryer.

Nothing serious, but when I mentioned it to another friend she stated that she ALWAYS pulls the plug on certain appliances when she leaves the house. In particular, the toaster oven and coffee maker and she leaves the plug out of appliances she doesn't use every day. Mixer, can opener.

Do you guys do that?

My appliances stay plugged in all the time.

I pull some. Coffee maker, toaster oven (cord gets SO HOT!), but leave in

my hair dryer because it is so danged hard to unplug!

Rather inconsistent!

What we learned from a house fire....

About 10 years ago a rental home of ours had a fire. When the Fire Marshall came out to inspect, it was found that the tenant's daughter had left a curling iron plugged in and it shorted out, causing the the fire. Thank God the girl awakened when fire came up her bed skirt! While speaking with the official, we found out that a huge percentage of house fires are caused by coffee makers that are left plugged in. He said to ALWAYS unplug that. I unplug a lot of things these days. Especially if we are leaving for an overnight jaunt.

That's my 2 cents! smileys/smile.gif

I have to tell you this, Debbie. Last year I was in the kitchen when I smelled smoke.

The hair dryer, which I always left plugged in, was smoking and had melted the wall outlet. And I STILL forget to unplug it.

3. I wonder if

the vent in the drying machine was clean. If you take out the filter and run water on it and the water doesn't go through the filter, it's time to clean the filter with a good brush. I do this because I'm so paranoid about the dryer catching on fire.

We always unplug toaster oven because it continues to pull electricity, >

plus we unplug the coffee maker daily. When we leave home for overnight or trips, I unplug the above, plus washer, dryer, instant hot water faucet, hot water tank, but we do have timers running on lamps in three rooms and they get very warm. It's a catch 22!

Was the dryer running? I leave everything plugged in. All my outlets in kitchen and bath

have "trips" for safety. Never heard of coffee pots or hair dryers or curling irons starting fires if they weren't "on". Learn something new every day.

kettle, coffe maker and toaster. paranoid habit born in uk when i was instructed to shut off every

plug lest the whole flat should burn to the ground due to dodgy wiring. also never leave dishwasher/washer/dryer running while out - have heard numerous stories about floods and the like.

I NEVER leave the dryer running when I step out of the house, even for a minute. I also unplug....

the coffee maker when going on a trip. (Trip being more than 2 days). And if I remember, I unplug the TV sets if we're gone on vacation in the summer. I heard lightning can blow out your TV and cause a fire.

They did a report on those plug-in room fresheners

and found they cause more fires than home appliances
