Don't think it has anything to do with the cloud--just highjacking ordinary

computers with weak passwords all over the world, including phones, cameras (!), etc.

If you have everything in "the cloud" and you can't get to it, such as what happened in this case,

it could definitely be an issue.

We use Google products at work, and I keep copies of everything important locally as well. The "cloud" is handy, but not perfect.
