from Gloria, his mother/my coworker:

Our son, Andrew, was transferred on Thursday, August 7th, to Jacksonville to the Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital. The assessment from today’s care team meeting is that they anticipate discharging him in a month, tentatively on September 9th. Andrew had a successful cranioplasty surgery (replacement of the skull) performed in late July, and is beginning to speak more and more daily. At Brooks he will be experiencing more of a “boot camp” regime of therapy (physical, occupational, speech, cognitive, psychological), with a minimum of 3 hours daily. After his discharge, he will be released to live at home with us, but with the need for outpatient care and in-home care as well. We will be learning more as that time approaches. We continue to be appreciative of your thoughts and prayers for us as we have gone through this journey. Thanks so much!

(Mar's Note: LM has a new policy where employees can donate their own vacation hours to other employee. This started back when hurricanes and tornados were impacting employees who needed time off for home repairs. Gloria has been able to access this donation pool to spend time with Andrew. Better donating it to Andrew than spending time on a beach somewhere with a pina colada.)

Awww...I especially love that your'e able to donate vacation/sick time. Sounds like

she'll need a freezer full of goodness for when her son comes home too. smileys/smile.gif

My friend who had two annyerisms made a full physical recovery. The most significant issue she still suffers from is a lack of confidence. The fact that she didn't get early talk therapy, voicing her fears, and receiving constructive coping strategies, I believe, hindered her full recovery. When the body heals, the mind still needs attention.

Our City has a program where the employees can donate vacation time to others in time of great need

I always loved being able to give someone a day or two of my vacation time. When the city employees all donate a block of time, it really adds up and it is very helpful for recovery and mental health. Plus, it is easy to get those days back by just working a bit longer each week or working during a floating holiday.

Andrew is such a lucky young man to have the support group and the great medical care. It sounds like he will have a very successful recovery.

Just now came across this. What a journey Andrew has had & one will continue 4 him.Thx for posting!
