NFRC: Polder Meat Thermometer Question

In the past year, I have gone through several meat thermometers (the kind with the display that stays outside the oven and the metal probe stays inserted in the beef/chicken/lamb item in the oven). Each time, the metal cord connecting the probe to the display unit inadvertently touched the heating element and scorched so that the display said "HI" instead of the proper meat temperature. Can anyone offer me insight on what I am doing wrong? It's annoying to keep replacing these. Thanks in advance.

I use one of these in an electric oven with no problems. Can you pull the cord taut enough that it

doesn't touch the element, making sure any excess is out side the oven? Also remove any extra racks before using? Not sure I understand why you're having a problem.

I have had nothing but trouble with these.

I have three bodies that I use as timers only. I can not keep a probe working for more that a couple of uses. And I have a gas stove and gas grill. I have gone back to an instant read digital that I think Richard recommended. Any thoughts on the polder?

I bought a Talyor for my husband's birthday. We haven't opened the package yet....

Anyone have this brand & can tell us of any problems so I can return it if necessary?

We just bought a Taylor wireless remote

thermometer/timer. It's been removed from the package, and had batteries inserted, but I have yet to test it out.
I also have 2 Polder thermometers, but I just tossed out one of the probes, as it was not behaving. I will use that as just a timer, which I love, btw, since it can be set for musc longer than any other I have, and will continue to beep at me until I turn it off.
I have used my Polder probe in both my electric oven and my smoker, and have not had a problem with the wire getting scorched. I think the trick is to keep it as taut as possible inside the heat box.
The probes don't last forever...the one I pitched was good for about 2 years, and it does get used quite a bit.

I have linked the Polder products page here. Try contacting them with your problem!

All these comments about Polder made me think that...

when I went into the store and ASKED for a Polder, they didn't have any. Could they have been pulled from the shelves because of all the problems people were having?

All this reminds me we've just ordered a Thermapen. Anyone have one? Hope it's not a

mistake as it's right pricy. I know Cook's Illustrated has rated them highly and the feature that sold us was that the probe has to be barely inserted into the meat, bread, etc becausse the "reader" is in the very tip.
