NFRC - questions about hand-held sifters

I have been shopping for 3 years for a good flour sifter and just see the same ones over and over. I saw a terrific one once at Surfas, but it was way too big - now I wish I had gotten it. It was like the squeeze kind, but worked with almost no pressure at all and I have never seen one like it again - Surfas doesn't even know what I'm talking about. I have searched every kitchen shop I can find, and most of them are awful, irritates my carpal tunnel, bad design, etc.

Any good recommendations out there?!

Although I agree with you Pat (on the chocolate)...

I am currently using a sieve until I find the sifter I want, but I just end up with flour all over the place - what a mess! I need the more control I get with a sifter. AND, I don't like the crank ones because the flour always comes out the side hole where the crank goes into the sifter and again... a flour mess all over.

Yeah, I'm picky I guess, but I use one so much that I know what works for me.

I have hand/wrist problems too and use a cone shaped sieve...

they seem to hold more and then I use a small whisk. This seems less irritating to use and the whisk helps - even tapping a sieve was irritating.

I'm curious, cheezz, what other gadgets you use in cooking to accomodate your injury?

I have a can opener that is called an EZ Squeeze but it doesn't work on big cans, and I'm not ready yet to get an electric one. A jar opener from Oxo that's very helpful, and a Cuisinart Mini chop since chopping by hand is hard. I just tried an Alligator chopper from Williams Sonoma(sort of like an egg slicer but dices, small and large) but it's hard to push down on and I think doing dicing by hand is easier.

On my wish list is the copper Kitchen Aid with a bread hook since kneading bread has been out of the question for a year or two now. I have a very old kitchen aid which I love but it was before bread hooks were invented...

Would love to hear what works for you!

hi Heather... haven't taken any measures to accommodate it.

I am glad to hear your review on the alligator chopper, though, as I was thinking of asking for one on my Christmas wish list smileys/smile.gif I have an easy jar opener - one of those things that looks like a big rubber band from a car fan or something. Works great.

I have the Kitchen Aid with the bread hook - great invention. I'll look for the cone-shaped sieve as I haven't even thought of those although I know I must have seen them and not noticed them.

Funny enough, my carpal tunnel has disappeared after having it since 1979. I had a series of cortisone shots in my tailbone (yeah, OUCH!) to fix pain in my hips and the carpal tunnel seems to have been healed in the process!! Up until then, I couldn't sleep more than 2 hours without waking up in excruciating pain in both wrists. It was worth the shots!
