NFRC: Radio station KGO in San Francisco

For those of you living in or near the San Francisco bay area or anyone who tunes into KGO. I am so sad about Cumulus Media laying off over 20 news staff people. It is a radio station I tuned into often, especially when traveling in the area or late at night to listen to Ron Owens. The past two nights I have tuned into KGO and could not believe what I was hearing. I actually thought they had been hacked by a third world country. Preaching talking heads who sounded like they were in a tunnel and the preaching was interspersed with terrible music. It was simply awful. If what they are doing now is how it is going to be for future programming I have no idea how they will survive. What a shame.

Radio overall is really taking hit as stations are gobbled up by corporations

In the SF Bay Area we had some of the best radio in the country, stations ranked #1 across the US and now most all of them are gone. One of the things I really enjoy when visiting LA is SoCal still has some great radio stations. I've always loved radio in the car vs. tapes/CD/etc and now I'm lucky if I can get 1 classic rock station that seems to play the same 100 records over and over again.

Karen, FYI:

"Veteran radio talk-show host Ronn Owens will be moved from KGO radio, his home for the past 40 years, to politically conservative sister station KSFO....At KSFO, the liberal Owens will find himself holding forth amid conservative syndicated voices like Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage, who will lead into Owens’ 3-to-6 p.m. show. Owens said he would provide an alternative to the “drivel” that his new “Hot Talk” colleagues provide, but conceded he was worried about facing “a group of listeners at KSFO who don’t love me.”"

Thanks for the info Michael, the canned filter is enough to make me run and never come back

Happy to hear it may/will get better.

We have a local radio station(KCNR) which is owned by a local couple. Most programming is done by local people, business owners, doctors, health care providers etc. with some major news affiliates. The owner is a retired Marine who served three tours in Afghanistan. His wife is a former Gold Digger who entertained with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis at age 19 for a few years. She entertains all over town and they do a lot of community service work. Great station. I especially love their morning talk show, which has a chat room and really gets the community involved. I am a radio junkie. I like the fact that I can move all around the house and yard, doing my chores and still learning a lot everyday.

same thing happened with KFOG (also Cumulus)- a staple (more)

radio button in all my cars since 1994. smileys/smile.gif
