NFRC: Roomba or IRobot vacuums Do they really pick up sand, dust particles, etc?

I may be moving where the whole first floor is hardwood. There's central vac, but if one of these is a good investment, I'd like to hear.

Thanks for reading,

I love mine..

I affectionately call her Geneva. I have hard wood with rugs on top, some with fringe, and a brown dog.
She does a great job. At first I would turn her loose in two rooms and she would work until she pooped out and died. But I now only have her do one room at a time - she usually can do 2 good size rooms on a charge. I did get the "walk in" charger so that is she is in the room with the charger, she rests in the charger.
I do move chairs and stuff out of the way and some really light rugs are a problem, so I just pick those up.
The real beauty is that you vacuum much more often 'cause it is so easy. In fact, she is roombaing away as I type.
She did break her legs ( and ate them ) so get extra brushes.

Thank you for your reply. I'm sold. Need to make a purchase if I get the condo. Thanks! NT
