NFRC: Siegfried's Memorial Tree has arrived...

How Lovely! I am sure it will put a smile on your face every time you look at it. Which will bring

back fond memories of Siegfried.

Thanks everyone! ...more...

Marg, how did you guess? Yes, right in his preferred area.

This is my tradition when I lose one of my furry children. I halve the ashes and use 1/2 at the base of the tree and the other 1/2 goes into a special music box. This way, Siegfried will be a living part of my garden as his ashes nourish the tree, just as Mrs. Fricka Wotan's (my German Shepherd) ashes are now part of the river birch in my garden.

Siegfried was a very special dog and he needed a very special tree. I spent weeks researching and working with my nursery to get this tree. I'm just so happy with how it looks. My sister gave me a little memorial rock with an inscription and an embossed picture of Siegfried inside that I will place at the base of the tree after we plant it.

Please tell us more about the special music box? I will share this lovely story with my friends at

the no-kill shelter where I volunteer. Many kind thoughts to you, Richard.

Marianne, I select a music box and then

select the music to go with it. For instance, Fricka's box is an Italian black ebony box inlaid with an intricate burled walnut tracery. It plays Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Variation XVIII, by Sergei Rachmaninoff. I'm still looking for the perfect box for Siegfried and trying to decide which music it should play. I then get an engraved brass plate that I install inside the lid with the name and dates. They're very sad at first, but after some years go by, it's nice to be able to open the lid and remember them. Also inside I place a tuft of fur, tags, a card with their footprint, and some other mementos of their life with me.
