NFRC: They're clearing the airspace over my neighborhood for the President's arrival.

Lots of military helicopters and such.

We live a couple miles north of the airport and never really know it's there because the planes take off and land east - west.

Pretty amazing show of force!

Then-President Bush ate at a mexican restaurant in my area. They didn't ask me...

...'cause I would have sent him to a different one right down the street that's much better!

They renamed the enchilada plate he ordered "The Presidential Special".

One interesting thing this place does is coat their chile rellenos in a HUGE mound of beaten whites with beaten yolks folded in. The thing is about 6 inches thick. You can see it in the link in one of the photos. They broil it and get the top all brown. In fact, it's in the picture at the top of the menu. It's the one in the back.

HAH!

Try living in Chicago!! But we are LOVING IT!! Disruptions and ALL.

I got "Obama'd" a couple of times during the days leading up to the Christmas holidays as Obama's offices were located next to the Post Office and only a couple of blocks from the office. As the motorcade went through streets were blocked off in a 4-6 block area. Everything stopped. Buses, vehicles, pedestrians. It was amazing.

We watched Friday as they cleared the airspace here and saw the military helicopters returning to base after escorting the President to O'Hare this morning.

Chicago excitement aside, I applaud the President for being so focused on leading a "normal" life for himself and his family, and returning to the people, to real places, to real situations as best he can. At least it seems more real to me than some remote ranch in the middle of Texas. (No offense intended.)

And, on another note . . . while the Obamas tend to dine at places I can only dream of being able to visit, it's a great boost to our restaurantuers. High dining and low dining spots alike.

A family we're close to here in AZ are personal friends of President Bush (the elder) and his...

...lovely wife, Barbara.

Very gracious, down-to-earth couple, according to our friends.

All politics aside, the Office deserves respect. If I ever am fortunate enough to meet a U.S. President, sitting or former, I will certainly give him or her that respect.

Magnolia! You've been away for a long time and I was thinking of you not too long ago. So good to

see you back! Stick around more, okay?

Magnolia! Great to see you! You know I have to ask....Did you coordinate your annual

Jan/Feb party? Hope you are well!
Best,
Barb

My husband ordered that relleno plate!! It's a HUGE plate of egg whites with chile strips under..

Very strange. We laughed so hard - it looks like a science experiment gone bad! I took a picture of it since it was bigger than his head!!!

I'm with you Michael, not a great restaurant.
Out of curiosity, where would you have recommended???

For basic, familiar mexican food, I would have sent him to Manuel's, about 2 miles east...

...of TeePee on Indian School and about 28th Street.

Any of their dishes that use stewed shredded chicken (chicken burros, etc.) are excellent! They use whole chickens and stew them in the kitchen (imagine a restaurant doing some real cooking!) themselves, with a wonderful seasoning.

I get a chicken burro from the a la carte menu, with either norteno sauce or enchilada stye (red sauce with cheese on top).

Shredded beef tacos are great, as are the fajitas.

Their complimentary salsa's are standard stuff, but very tasty. I sometimes take home a pint of the smooth red sauce. It is very good.

My kids love the Espinaca con Queso appetizer. Basically melted velveeta with a touch of salsa and spinach.

The Spinach Enchiladas are also good.

This is a long-standing family-run place, like Tee Pee. But better, IMHO.

Arriba is good too, up on Camelback and 20th Street, if you like hot, hatch chile, New Mexico-style food.

Ok. It's only 9:15 and I'm hungry!!!!!!!

Thanks so much Michael - I'm going to try it out! Your recommendations sound

right up my alley - especially your kids' appetizer favorite!!
Great Mexican food I can eat 24/7!
Thanks again!

I've watched women makes these at Rancho de Chimayo. They use their hands to

nestle the fluffy eggwhite-covered cheese-stuffed relleno. They lowered their hands to an inch above vats of bubbling hot oil and gently tilted their hand until the chili slid into the fat, bobbing right back up. Only took about a minute each side to make them golden brown. Freaked me out worrying they would burn their hands. But they just kept doing it, over and over again.

I miss those.
